My MICRA project

Yeah, I would just do that @Mark:). You know you can buy the plastic squares you place cable ties through? See if there's an aluminium one available or fabricate your own and stick a nice thick tie through it, should work fine :)

^^thread hijacked :D :D :D
so today my grandad came round as they do! i started showing him what i was doing to it and that the head was off, i told him that where someone removed the distributor at the scrapyard they damaged one of the bolts and i can't get it out :( he said he will pay for it to get machined out and then i got chatting to him about it getting skimmed, i want a light skim to up the compression ratio but i don't want to have to add half links to the chain! what do you recommend guys? he is getting it done next week so will have it back in by next weekend :)
YAY FOR GRADADS!!! :D
i will have a little update soon with pics too guys don't worry i haven't abandoned you :p
@karlj thankyou so much for the valve spring compressors! i think i am finished with them but i will wait until the engine is running before dropping them roundd if thats cool with you?

I think you dont NEED the half link but the chain will be noisy without it. As far as i know frank was running like that for a good while. Check his blogs on here and the Aussie forum

the half links are for running a 3mm skim really, its just a different option to the 1.0 piston 1.3,s (easier to do)
and an option for the 1.4,s too (that cant use 1.0 flat-top pistons)

@frank forgive me if I'm wrong then but a 1mm skimmed 1.0l head with 1.3 cams with advanced sprockets but stock timing can be run easily without any problems?

i ran the 2mm skimmed/weld filled head with 1.0 pistons once, it was waaay ott and pinked like crazy, it must have been about 14:1 :) you would need some pretty wild cams to run that spec

so heres the late update :)

my new head gasket came so i finished porting the head and continued attempting to remove the distributor bolt (still no luck) luckily my grandad has stepped in, YAY FOR 2MM HEAD SKIM!
so heres the head after the port and polish sorry for the bad picture, doesn't look very good but its super smooth and clean :)

I then looked at the valves, i thought i had scrubbed them up quite well with elbow grease, i didn't do that good of a job so i got my dremel with a copper wire brush and they have come up extremely well! unfortunately i also haven't got a pic of the final product :(
DAMN YOU CARBON!

Next i removed the old valve seals using long nose pliers, one or two of them were pretty mashed up, possibly partly due to removal *cough*wasnt me*cough*

i then started the rebuild, i thought it would be as easy to rebuild as take apart but god i never want to see another collet in my life! :D

Halfway through i had a quick pit stop :D

I then decided to clean the head up so i masked it all up and sprayed the visible bits high heat silver which i think will look really good with the red rocker cover

Thats pretty much everything for the moment as the head has been sent of to be skimmed :) can't wait to get it back :)
can someone answer this? when removing the head you have to remove the bolt under the inlet manifold, well i have removed this bracket completely now due to it being quite awkward, do i have to have it i.e. will it do any damage not having it?

cheers for the help and once again hope you enjoyed :)
P.S. I HAVE ALSO BOOKED MY JAE TICKETS SO IF ANYONE FANCIES DOING A CONVOY LET ME KNOW EITHER NOW OR NEARER THE TIME! :)

i ran without that bracket for a few years mark, and the 2 awkward head/mani bolts too
and i fit the collets to the retainer then push the spring down by hand :)

okay cool, it just makes it easier for removal correct? i also haven't bothered to install the washers under the valve spring as i installed the seals then realised i forgot them :D ahhh okay i put it all on but only with one collect then clamped it down and then released to seat it i then compressed it again until eventually there was enough space to install the other collet i don't know if this it the way its to be done but it worked for me @frank

i left the washers out too, when using 10mm lift cams :) and i bounce the collets out with a socket ontop and hammer (to remove them) , then refit them by hand (no compressor)

aye, damn fiddly job innit, if you hold your thumb on the retainer/collets, and push the spring with the other hand, after about 50 goes it gets a lot easier :)

hahaa yeah i suppose it gets easier with experience *i hope*, ill give that a try next time :) although i can imagine my thumb killing halfway through!

@Huggy444 hahaha yeah i suppose we all would just a shame they are soooooo annoying to get back in! also @frank did you lighten your flywheel if so how? as from memory i think the clutch felt like it was going if thats the case i will get the flywheel lightened whilst i have access to it :)

@frank did you do that yourself? i would probably get the aching shop next door to do it :) was it very noticeable difference? looks like its not just been lightened but seriously lightened :D

@frank okay well thats something i will do just may as well wait until the clutch goes, i will ask the machinist next door if he can do it and how much he would charge :D

Guys I have checked everything and I think it is because the car has been sat with the head off for a while but why is so much smoke coming out when I Rev it? It's white smoke so think it's just condensation but if anyone can verify this then that would be great!
