Turbo Setup ==================

Hi, ive been contemplating to have a turbo fitted to my 1.3 K11 i think im craven for a little more power as im having trouble keeping up with traffic lol, basically wanna bolt one on rather than having all engine mods i.e. having to lower comp pistons fitted etc!!

How easy is it to make up a turbo setup? has anyone done this and does it put a smile on yer face :)

Could anyone make up a turbo setup for me??

Ive seen this kit which is a bolt on for the 1.3 but its waaaay to expensive etc - link below -

An extra headgasket lowers compression just fine but if your not wanting alot of power and boost then bolt on up and off you go. I done my own setup, you can see it by clicking on the link below
 
Isn't hard to get all the bits together to be honest. Do you know much about turbocharging?
 
Hi guys, with turbo charging, cant say i do, but as with a standard 1.3 engine would be good to have abit more poke on the acceleration side etc.... had a look at Stani1029 (blog) and seems like alot involved cutting, chopping and welding with the manifold, isnt there a manifold already built for the micra? im in all directions of what to do on this mmmmm any suggestions?

Hi guys, thanks for input, i guess with the exhaust pipes etc aint bad as i can take the car down to a performance exhaust place to make a downpipe to mate with the turbo, but whats the most hassel i see is the manifold for the turbo to bolt to cos i cant afford to have my car out of action as i use it everyday and to modify a manifold means ill have to take my janspeed 4 branch manifold off and play about which i dont have time for... once i have the manifold all made up ill then have the Janspeed 4 branch and janspeed connector pipe to the decat up for sale!!!

From limited experience:
Its very useful if you dont have to use the car everyday, but not impossible if you do.
I would expect to spend at least 1500 to get everything (if you are prepared to wait for cheap things to come up or make things yourself).
There will be some stuff you have to do yourself but nothing massively difficult (trimming of bodywork and cutting pipes)
Write yourself a list of everything you will need, then start to collect the parts:) there are plenty of blogs/build threads on here which have LOADS of information. A low boost setup can be fairly simple. But if you want more than a few psi you will have to consider timing and fuel!! For a very low pressure setup you will basically need: Turbo (T2 is best), Turbo manifold, Down pipe, oil feed/return and compressed air piping.
If you can weld you are at a massive advantage:D

J, I've been thinking the same thing about turboing my car. Was looking at that one on gum tree but I'd rather build on mine then buy another car due to space - reason why I sold the G# which I'm starting to regret doing lol.

Perhaps we can work on something together.

Noddi, What is the T2 from? Is a td04 from earlyimpreza okay for this type of project?

Im thinking along same lines. Would it be okay and safe to fit a manifold and exhaust system readywith a blanking plate over turbo mount until everything else has been bought and cut to fit?
If i can do bits at a time on my days off then i can still drive it as a daily runner.

little more whiplash feeling would be had with the 1.0 gear box, facelift 99-2000 i think, until you get the turbo set up.
 
Hi R-REG-SR, I like what you said about 1.0 Ltr gearbox on a 1.3 with a little whiplash cos that's the gearbox I'm running with my 1.3 and the acceleration is quick as is but its that extra horses that needs to be released, when I currently floor it I get that smile but I'm looking for the ear to ear fixed grin like the joker out of batman and I'm sure I'm speaking on behalf of SuLuR as we're on this same project!

Would be nice to see the autoblocks limit but I don't plan to push limits (yet) just low boost. How much PSI are turbo people running at the moment?

Im running 7psi from the T3 on standard internals. Done about 5000 miles now and running sweet. Please with how quick it is. :)

When i first did the conversion i did a small (and im sure inaccurate video) and 0-60 was about 7.5 - 8.0secs and that was with lower boost than im running now, standard biscuit tyres, standard suspension and my MK1 bodged exhaust.

Now im running double the boost, coilovers, 15 x 7 steels and decent MK3 version exhaust.

Will get another video up at some point.

I did the conversion in a weekend. Half of a Saturday and all Sunday and drove it to work Monday morning. That included making an exhaust :)
 
That looks the dogs bollocks. Did you put a bigger second cat to make up for emissions stani?

No i dont use a cat with the system i had made but i have a seperate system which im going to fit for MOT that includes a cat.

Im something like 12.2psi and im going to up the boost to around 17psi when i return to have the maps little flaws tweaked

Mechanically Id say Im capable but I dont have a welder (was hoping to get frank to mock up a mani :p).

You dont really need a welder. The only bit you need some custom skills is making the exhaust where as a welder does come in handy.

As for the actual conversion you dont need that much other than normal tools and depending how you route the intercooler pipes then maybe an angle grinder.

Where i routed mine i needed to cut a bit of the front panel but i did that at the same time of replacing the front crossmember.

Any questions if you do the conversion your more than welcome to bung me a PM or even call me if you get stuck. There is loads of us on here who have met all the pitfalls of turbo charging. We can help.

Just remind yourself when your under the car on sunday nights in the dark fixing stuff that its all worth it in the end.

imo from experience, research much as possible into suitable ways of prepping the car to support the intended power output AND if ur able to financially support the overall conversion & running costs:

ie, upgrade fuel system, cooling system, intake/bov/exhaust plumbing, size & type of intercooler to reduce detonation, clutch, drivetrain, tyres, brakes. lots to think about.

then once the physical preps complete, the last step is getting it mapped properly (especially with higher boost) on a dyno by a specialist like Ed if ya wanna save time, money, engines, fuel, turbo's and headaches in the long run

I would love to get a welder and probably will in the coming months just so im not relying and annoying people. I want to take things slow, I do have another micra BUT i often do long journeys so wouldnt want to go bang! Reliability is key, over max power for the time being - I believe its the same for J.

Paul, do you have completely stock internals? even gasket?

This is the Manifold im considering, franks sexy handywork - believe the turbo to be a T15?

yep stock internals n genuine nissan HG (which I recommend cos they're much stronger than cheapo soft ebay ones).

all the prepping/upgrading before remapping determines how much potential power/energy the tuner can safely unleash before the weakest part of the cars setup gives up (a system is only as strong as the weakest link) ie:
leaning-out afr or hot air intake causing detonation so tuner has to pull back,
clutch slip,
overheating, etc

the ecu remapping at the last step is the most important cos that's where the tuner balances & determines the engines performance, reliability and drivability

How much power can a standard clutch take? I don't plan to take apart the engine or gearbox?

Last time I had standard clutch was on the n/a janspeed setup withstanding 92bhp even on trackdays.

How much more it'll take, I dunno (frank may know?) cos I upgraded to a 180mm helix 3 pad clutch when I went turbo. But even with that clutch, which wasn't properly bedded tbh, she couldn't barely withstand the 160bhp/ftlb before glazing/slipping under pressure.

Although remember that turbos tend to push the torque curve much earlier down the low end so a weak clutch is more prone to slipping early on.

Now got a 200mm helix organic clutch that'll handle pretty much anything.
Dunno why I didn't switch over sooner back then to save wasting the old 3pad clutch.

Maybe the PP is abit heavier than stock but u get use to it.
And maybe I've lost the lightening response of the Jun flywheel (cos I could only fit the big clutch on a redrilled solid 3piece stock flywheel I had) but the reliable 160bhp made up for that.

Best to have a clutch too powerful that's future-mod proof than hav a weak one, only to upgrade later on after finding out it slips.
 
one question i have in mind thats bothering me abit!! i am running a 1ltr gearbox on a 1.3 engine and the clutch is a standard 1ltr, is there going to be a problem with this gearing setup if i were to fit a turbo? i know i wil have to change my brakes also as precautionary cos i am looking to stop and not smack the car up lol!! also many other things need sorting too as i go along!

Ok, so far i feel better knowing that, cos i dont really want to start buying another gearbos, then driveshafts etc to convert over to the 1.3 GB, thats more money in the pit for me which am not looking to fork out!!! also with the 1ltr G/B and 1.3 engine, having a turbo on this would it be quicker acceleration than having the 1.3 G/B? as i understand the gearing higher on the 1ltr!
