Richard Hammond Top Gear Man In Crash
Updated: 21:15, Wednesday September 20, 2006

Richard Hammond, one of the presenters of TV's Top Gear programme, is reportedly in critical condition following a car crash.

Mr Hammond was hurt while filming an edition of the show and taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

He was reportedly trying to set a new land speed record for Britain in a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned.

Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened.

Firefighter Dave Ogden, who witnessed the crash, told Sky News that the 36-year-old presenter was able to speak as he was taken out of the wreckage of the car.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, southeast of York, where the filming was taking place.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

A spokeswoman for the BBC, which produces Top Gear, said: "The incident happened quite recently and the focus of our attention is on Richard at this stage."

Mr Hammond, who lives near Cheltenham with his wife Amanda and their two daughters, has also presented Sky's Brainiac and shows including Time Commanders and Petrolheads.

aaah no....hes the best presenter ive ever seen....hes a genius

hope he gets well soon....

i feel upset now...if he dies i dont think anyone can ever replace him

come on hampster.!!!!

yeah, actualy its on the news now...and they wont say how he is...and he was unconsious....

bloody sky news...

Just watched the BBC news. They said he was unconcious when taken to hospital. He was airlifted to a specialist hospital (not taken to the closest one) and is believed to have sustained serious head injuries, as he is on a neuro ward.

I hope he recovers - Top Gear wouldn't be the same without him.

Emergency services were said to have found him unconcious at the scene

From the way that article is written, they dont know for sure, however if several reports say it then its probably true. Poor bloke, gets worse the more you read about it

"hes an irreplaceable" presenter...hes got months to recover before they air the next series!!

Next series is starting on 8th October according to Wikipedia :suspect:

most of thesreies has been pre-recorded anyway.....its just the in studio bit thats not gonna happen...and if hes ok...they might even go and see him at the bedside....lol...topgear leeds!!

I thought that yesterday the way they worded one of their articles, about where he lived, his education & his family!! Like, they've written him off already, or, saving some time if the worst does happen by having it already written

Definitly good he's been changed to stable instead of critical, but anything could still happen

yeh just heard on the news he has improved slightly but is still on the neuro ward. least he had the correct gear on tho could have been a lot worse...280!!! with no breaks and just a parachute for stopping poor guy.

the guys a legend top gear would be nothing without him

my mum told me this morning i thought he was in the serious brin injuries ward.. very bad new.. hadent he broken the record and was trying a return run?? hazy details but hope hes alright.. he was the least favourite of the top gear team for me but he was funny..

He should know better, he is after all responsible for much of the sites security, and as such must be seen to be responsible.

Looks like he's going to pull through, BBC news says he's improved slightly overnight. My best wishes to him and his family though.

I just hope the government/bbc don't go and stop Top Gear from doing things like that again. Its easily one of the best shows on television over the last few years and I'd hate to see it change because of this.

I really like the idea of sending him a card though :)

This is terrible, i heard it on local radio thismorning, im actully realy upset about it, i love every program he's in :( Brainiac, Top Gear even the 5 o'clock show is funny to watch :(

GET WELL HAMMY!!!
