Alarm System?

Shortly after xmas ill be looking to upgrade my cars security, obviously to stop people trying to steal it, and hopefully to bring down the cost of insurance when i declare my modifications.

Not looking to break the bank here, but anything around £100 im willing to pay, anybody have any recommendations of what to get, or what not to get?

If you want something that's insuranced recognised, get a Clifford alarm with all the additionals. My mate said his cost over a grand!

A much better option is to just get one off ebay like me. It had anti hijack, immobilizer and a noisy siren, so if anyone broke in, they'd soon leg it. The immobilizer also worked excellently, and needs a remote fob to deactivate it. Also had central locking interfaces.

The whole lot cost me about £40 or less, and fitted by Ed. It wouldn't lower your insurance premium, but the money you save on the cheap alarm can go towards beer etc,

so out of interest as this is my first car, by declaring mods on your insurance, does this have a significant increase in your premiums? atm i have a "nissan tune kit" by Kristian, 15" TSW alloys, and an induction kit, also looking to get an exhaust system and maybe manifold too after xmas, this likely to cost me a lot to declare?

Depending on the value of what your declaring, for example, if any individual modification increases power by more than 5bhp, then they may not insure you (quote - tesco). Or, if any modification costs more than £250 in value (again tesco).

I wouldn't be surprised if you added all your mods to your policy, it would go up, and then added the thatchams approved alarm, it probably wouldn't go down that much.

If you get a quote with a specialist in modified cars, such as Sky insurance, you might get a better quote.

CAT 2 for sure, needs fitting by a professional though. CAT 1 will lower it a bit more but not much.

i always thought that cat 1 was better, and yes it does need fitting professionally, with a certificate to prove it, or it wont lower it at all.

i have a a k12 witch has the nissan immobiliser fitted as standard,im also looking for an alarm but i want it working with my central locking system that i allready have,i dont want to key fobs,so looks like i gotta get the nissan alarm...

Primal, i dont know how this opinion fairs with other 'responsible' motorists out there but unless you do something crazy to your car like get a turbo i wouldnt bother telling 'big brother' anything about your car.

All i have done to my new Micra now is a K&N induction kit and some Nissan Micra alloys, but cos they aint standard, i wouldnt expect jack in the event of a claim. Sure if your cars worth over 5k tell your insurer about that powerflow exhaust etc. etc. but i wouldnt otherwise.

For example if you ran into a tree (write off) in your fully comp. Micra and you had a custom exhaust, they wouldnt pay up if you didnt tell them. If you did tell them though, and claimed, you would be looking at a higher premium in the first place, a claim to ruin your clean record ('protected no claims' is a fraud cos you still pay more), and a lousy payout for what your car is worth.

Anyway sorry what i was gonna say is you really have to tell your insurer everything about your car if you wanna get that discount for having a proper alarm. And it will cost a bomb to get a 'pro' to fit it.

If it was me i would get one between 50-100 online ebay etc. fit it yourself if you can, if not it wont cost much for a mechanic to. One with a shock sensor and makes lots of noise! They are a big deterrant! Ive been woken up in the past by just the sensor warning screech (dont know whether it was chavs peeking at it or the wind!)

Lol hope this helps. (basically dont get screwed) :)
