gearbox

my gearbox has x5 on the top is it short ratio or long
Dunno about the X5, but if you clean up the housing at the top of the gear box just underneath the dizzy, you will see a code. The last two digits tell you whether you have a long or short range gearbox:

S4 = long range
S5 = short range

If you are interested, the gear ratios are as follows:

manual 4-speed:

1st 3.412
2nd 1.958
3rd 1.258
4th 0.921
rev 3.385
final 3.810

manual 5 speed (close ratio):

1st 3.412
2nd 1.958
3rd 1.323
4th 1.028
5th 0.850
rev 3.385
final 4.050

Manual 5 speed (long ratio):

1st 3.412
2nd 1.958
3rd 1.258
4th 0.921
5th 0.721
rev 3.385
final 3.810

Auto 3 speed:

1st 2.826
2nd 1.543
3rd 1.000
rev 2.364
final 3.737

going by them figures above, all people in theory would need to change to get a long ratio is easy

just swap the diff/final drive from a 4 spd into a 5 spd

theory is never the same a practice tho, if i could get 2 boxes a 4 and a 5 spd for free i'd try it in my spare time
