Gear shifter problems

Hiya all.
I jumped in the Micra the other morning and wiggled the gear stick to check i was in neutral before starting.
For a few seconds it sounded like i was stirring a box of tin cans. I checked under the bonnet then under the car but couldnt see anything obvious.
The sound disappeared and I started the car and have driven around for a bit with all seeming well.
I have noticed that there is now no "spring" in the gear stick when in neutral. Usually, if you wiggled it, it would spring back and sit by 3rd gear.
Any ideas folks before i start digging around ??

Is it an easy fix? And is it ok to drive around whilst getting my arse into gear??

never done it but i presume it will be...after all its just a spring

Easy fix, need to take the heat shield ofo though. you can probably still use the old spring by bending the snapped end and "making" new hook. very common fault.
every micra I had had it

aha! I've had the same trouble ever since i got teh car, I thought it was just a crap gearbox, is it a case of removing gaitor an such an is under there?

no its underneath the car
