RIP 2011-2014 Skymera's K11

Long time, no progress. UNITL NOW!

Couple weeks ago I had a pretty serious slack chain issue (Shocker). Lumpy idle, car refusing to start, cutting out when it did...and so on.

Was this the end of my K11? I thought so, even started shopping for Beemers...

Time went on and a new chain tensioner temporarily fixed the problem (Cheers to @Frank and Chris!). Cured the start up rattle and quietened the chain down. A month on and the rattle is back, idle is poor and the chain is noisy again.

With an MOT and a show looming I didn't want to risk the car just going pop.

This is my latest big news :)

CG13 from a V reg automatic. Condition looks okay, sump could be better. Being an auto it's unlikely to have been ragged. Mileage was quotes as "6k" but in all honesty it's more likely 60k. Still pretty low mileage and so long as it's a good runner, i'm more than happy.

Dying to get the cam cover off to get a good indiction of the engine condition.

The fitting will be done around @SirChris schedule ;)

Bit I've bought to go with the engine:
- x2 oil filters
- x2 4L engine oil Castrol Magnatec
- 5L Antifreeze
- Inlet / Exhaust mani gaskets
- Sump gasket

Cost me a pretty penny so far as I've paid top dollar for most except fitting (Love you Chris <3) ;)

More pics to follow.

Ive been toying with the idea of buying a CG13 lump for the micra, will be watching this to see just how difficult/easy it is (to me, a person with small mechanical knowledge) to pretty much decide if I'll go for it or not :)

Good man. BTW but loctite for threads. Love you too

Will do.

I'll also look into stainless cam cover bolts (If I can find them!). Hopefully the ones on there aren't seized and will undo nicely.

Some more bits!

Not sure which oil is best, Castrol or Petronas?

Likely the Petronas oil will only be used to flush the engine, then the Magnatec will be used.

Mobil 1 is Nissans oil though iirc
And genuine nissan (fram) oil filters are apparently. "Champion" filters are better :) just a nugget of info

I would have avoided the Halfrauds distributor cap tbh, i've read that they're a different brand to others and are un-reliable/don't last long at all

Yeah, Mobil Super Plus 2000 was on my list to buy, I just couldn't justify the price. I've used Castrol before and I rate it highly. Being part of one of the largest oil companies in the world, I'm sure BP know what they're doing :)

It was Sunday I discovered I needed a cap and it was my only day to buy one. MPD and Euros are shut Sunday so Halfords was my only option :(

But surely it was better than a cheap eBay unbranded one? ;)

Aye tis expensive which is a shame. Trade prices are loads better
The 'magnetec' technology has always intrigued me.
So I use a 50/50 mix of 5w30 castrol magnetec and Mobil 1 racing 0w50 best of all worlds :)
Remember "Its not oil, it's liquid engineering"

AutoGlass has just left.

Nice shiny new windscreen. Quality glass with the black shading around the edges and the mirror.
Even a nice rubber trim on the outside.

Bad news is he says it's had a windscreen job done before. Badly. It wasn't sealed properly and it's started to rot underneath the windscreen.

He's done what he can but does need sorting out in a year or two :(

He even said he wasn't really allowed to fit the windscreen but he didn't fancy leaving me without a windscreen at all!

Ah that's fair enough then if that was the only option. You never know, you may have good luck with it, i'm just going by what i've heard from others. I'm changing mine as well soon so fingers crossed it solves the problem :)

It is done!

Started the engine swap Friday evening and finished Saturday evening.

Very thorough, very well done@SirChris and @JoeK11

I did get few pics, here they are :)

Out goes the dirty lump!

Overall I'm very pleased and just wish I did this sooner

I need a better mani, my car actually feels slower than this one lol, mahoosive flywheel + stock mani = slowww

On the 1.3 that's got to be fairly quick :) you not got an aftermarket backbox?

Coilpack centre pipe (no cat but has a midbox silcencer) to a Sportex 2.5" tip.

It's pretty nippy on the 1.0 box. I wasn't expecting it when Chris put his foot down. His words were that I was clambering around to grab hold of something.
It's not "fast" by any means, end of the day it's a 1.3 Micra. It was however a shock to feel mine go that quick :)

Frank mani :) Cat compatible, very little faff. A 4-2-1 looks pretty, but that's it for road use imo.

And you have no cold air feed to your silly pod filter :/ almera box ftw!

The stock backbox directs the gases back on themselves TWICE, so after the manifold restrictions have been dealt with the backbox will probably actually yield some gains too.

Yeah mine was quick on the 1.0 box, but now its got a 2nd facelift 1.0 box with the the crank timing wheel on the fly which makes it weigh about twice what the other one did lol, clutch bites well though :) launches into 2nd nicely to see off lads at the lights :p

my pod filter is in the same place most peoples cai's are ... its not just sat on the t/b remember

Edit: also i cant fit an airbox (mera or micra) under my strut brace as it was off a micra with a rally intake like the humphris one iirc. if i leave the airbox on it thumps the brace when i lift off and sounds horrific

Ahh yeah I forgot that. Still think making the pipe longer and taking it from directly next to the rad is better. Will take pic of how I did mine tomorrow...

used to be like that, tube ran right over the cam cover and down by the mani, got very hot though and currently my slam panel is in the way

Sorry scott dont mean to hijack lol. Glad you like the engine :D

Here's my almera airbox setup, making a bracket so can bolt airbox down as well. Get some nice cold air from the front for gains :)

I use the standard GA snorkel which sits near the battery. No problems with it :)

I used to have a 70mm pipe from the box down to the floor but seemed to cause a slightly flatspot and the risk of sucking up water was too great.

Seems like a pretty easy swap!
Any trouble with it?

Would you say it's worth doing the swap? :)
No problems really. My clutch bearing is a bit naff but the engine is sweet as a nut.

Worth doing?
If you really want more power, then yes, without a doubt.

You can squeeze some more juice out of a 1.0 but in the end, a 1.3 swap works out to be more cost effective. Mine was no means cheap, but you pay for what you get ;)

If you're willing to spend very little you're going to end up with a 130k CG13 with tar for oil

I wish I did it August 2012, not this year.

in my opinion, its always good to first swap to the bigger engine and then move forward. then again the cg10 to cg13 is such an easy swap, which can be done in a couple of hours. nice swap skymera! :)

Fair enough so I guess it's really is a noticeable power difference!

Ah yeah, same with anything really!
Really thinking about it, how much did your lump cost if you don't mind me asking? :)

£200 shipped by pallet.
1.3 auto, 60k, very good nick. Worth every penny.

That's the price I saw at some a seen on fleabay, its not a bad price tbh (for an engine)

Assuming even if its an auto engine it's not a problem when fitting?
Needed to remove the torque thingy and the flywheel and also the inlet mani was different along with one of the belt pulleys.

Simple swap overs from my 1.0 block.

Well done on engine swap :)

........my 1.3 auto with 35k cost £26.02, love it when eBay auctions go right ;)

Anyway......good stuff! You doing anything else to it

My 1.3 with 86k was 40 quid, minus 20 quid for inlet mani, so my cg13 stands me 20 quid. :D
Definitely a worthwhile swap though isn't it Scott ;)

MOT looming so tidying up a few bits.

New Brembo drilled and grooved brake discs on their way. More of a "look pretty" thing than uber performance ;)
