Hey guys

Just finished re-fitting the engine, was a struggle but got there in the end. Of course now I have the timing chain still seems to be making a huge racket! I ran her for about a minute - Timing chain (at least I think thats what it is) was still noisy and smoke started to appear from the bay. Switched her of and when I had a good feel around she was very hot :(

Any ideas? It points to the chain to me but I could have sworn I got it right.

Heres two from when I finished the chain. Didnt change anything from then on.

Apart from adding the tensioners+rails.

Challenge??? There just stock 1300.

I dont get it, should I just let it run for longer? I also have a check engine light on the dash although that was there before the engine was removed...

I know the smoke could just be cack burning off, just seemed odd to me that it was still making such a noise.

you often get smoke joe, but i would lift the cam cover to check the tensioners are working ok and nothing is amiss

Checked the chain before, all seemed fine, will check again tomorrow. thanks frank.

Right ran it again this morning with a bit of a jump. Still noisy, I also have an oil light on on the dash, thinking maybe the pressure has'nt built up yet? Also does anyone have a photo of the HT leads to distributor connection. Im sure its firing at wrong times,.

Right firing order is fine, pressures just not building up though, its pointing towards a faulty oil pump. Could explain what happened to the old tensioner:doh:

Does anyone know where the oil pressure light wiring is?

Thanks Frank. We're going to attach a pressure gauge to confirm if there is anything happening. This is going to be gutting if it is the pump :(

Nissan Stealers quote £362

Nissan Breakers quote £90

For timing chain cover

i,ve got a spare pump joe if you need one :grinning: (maybe the p/r/v is stuck open ?)

Thanks Frank, might take you up on that offer, soon as I know the score I will get back to you.

Its probably the most likely outcome, could just need a good clean for all I know, wish Id cottened on to this before

what exactly have you done to the engine when it was out??

Just scrubed it up. Replaced timing chain, tensioners ect (the previous upper tensioner was smashed to bits), clutch, engine oil, trans oil, sparks, filters, ht leads and then sealed it all up.

Hi there
I am sorry to say that if you did not strip the pump and inspect it, and didn't clean the engine oilways, Then i would be looking at the oil pump very carefully ( you did replace the gasket on the pick up pipe ? also was the pick up pipe bent or damaged in any way either causing it to touch the bottom of the sump and block itself or too high and the oil is not reaching it.
The pump should be stripped and checked with feeler guages and a straight edge. Another thought is that the oil pressure relief valve is not seating properly due to ingested swarf.
SORRY but thats the only way your going to find out !
Very best wishes
Malcolm

Ingested Swarf? Can you elaborate...

What am I looking for with the PRV Frank?

On Friday we went to put the pressure gauge on but to get at it I first removed the oil filter... Not a drop in it! So that kind answered our question straight away.

Never replaced the pick-up pipe gasket just reused, surely it would still be feeding some oil if that was the problem though.

If the PRV was'nt seating properly or stuck open could it stop any oil?

Hi again,
By "ingested Swarf" I mean that the small pieces of the old tensioner that will have been pumped through the oil pump and throughout the engine whilst it was failing. If this has happened it would explain No oil as it would have passed through the pump on it's journey, the damage is caused by these particles is that they scratch and seriously damage the very close fitting parts that cause the pump to "pump"
If there is any stuck in the Pressure Releif / Regulator Valve then the valve will not close properly and the engine will not build up any oil pressure.
The pickup pipe. The scenarios i stated in my original post gives some likely problems with the pickup pipe that would result in No oil pressure.

Hope this helps, if not please post back

Malcolm

maybe the woodruff key fell out the pumpdrive joe ? (and the p/r/v is integral in the pump eh)

Incidentaly you would prime the oil pump with clean oil when rebuilding so that it would work at all. and i would at least put some oil in the filter on a car where this was practical ie where the opening in the filter was uppermost when installed.

Malcolm

Got the PRV of and all seems to be ok although looked like it could have maybe been scoring the wall on the one side. :suspect: woodruff key is still there too.

Have you ever taken the cover of with the block still in the car Frank? + How much would you want for that spare pump of yours :grinning:

i hav,nt had that pleasure joe no :p (members have fitted chains tho in situ, and thats a pump-off job)
and is a fiver ok ? :grinning:

ha fair enough, it can be done then i suppose.

That would be great thanks Frank, im going to give it all a check over first make sure its definately nothing obvious if not think pumps the next thing.

Ill see if I can get any pics of the PRV malcolm.

Thanks for the info guys. Posted a pic of the old oil pump on my blog if you want to have a look Malcolm (not great quality). Changed it all now, will turn it over tonight to see if its made a difference.(Y)

Oh Tell us all what time you will be spinning her over as i for one will be keeping EVERYTHING crossed for you.
One suggestion...... When you are all ready to spin her up, Take out the spark plugs and spin the engine over until you are 100% that you have oil pressure.
Good luck
and please let us know how it goes

Kind regards
Malcolm

Thats my plan Malcolm! Ha thanks will be about 6ish this evening after I get off work.

Yer sorry the pictures not great but Ive borrowed some feeler gauges from a collegue so when I have a half hour free I'll measure those gaps(Y)

Its ####ING ALIVE!!!(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y)(Y):grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning:

I have no idea how the hell it actually runs yet, but it idles fine and best of all she barely makes a sound.

Thanks for your help again guys. Frank cheques in the post. Im off to seal everything up to see if the ##### 'll actually drive(Y)
