White Knight wins annual Tas stump-pulling contest

Well today White Knight was run over the dyno after all the recent repairs and improvements.

Talk about exceptional results. This is not a turbocharger, but a supercharger, still delivering a hairline under 100kw at the wheels in terms of top end power - PLUS this was only on standard pump fuel.

But that same torque is there from around 2000rpm upwards. That's just crazy. Zero turbo lag, away you go at any RPM and still making more top end power than similar turbocharged setups.

I think the car would be pretty evil to drive.. Not many cars out there that it wouldn't be able to catch off guard and shoot past. I can't wait to see it at our next major meet.

Congrats David. White Knight now takes up 2nd position in the Dyno Rangers area.

If it was on the mainland running Optimax, you could be certain to say the stump puller has cracked the 100kw at the wheels milestone. Not bad from a 1.3 with stupendous torque!

Nice work Dave!

So after I read this article on Autospeed recently

"The Real Way of Comparing Engine Designs" http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_2807/article.html

I calculated the Stump Pullers Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP)

kW x 1200
BMEP = ---------------
litres x rpm

and get 13.120879120879120879120879120879.

So how does this compare to some other current cars? Extracts below are from the Autospeed article mentioned above.

3-litre Honda Accord V6, with 177kW at 6250 rpm 11.3 Bar.

Peugeot 206 GTi 180, 2-litre engine, 130kW at 7000 rpm. 11.1 Bar.

The latest iteration of the Holden Monaro sees it equipped with a 6-litre V8 developing 260kW at 5600 rpm. BMEP? 9.3 Bar!

The XR6 turbo, with 240kW at a very low 5250 rpm from its 4 litres has a BMEP of 13.7 Bar.

Mini Cooper S with its supercharged 1.6, developing 120kW at just 6000 rpm, has a BMEP of 15 Bar!

Of course this does not take into consideration power to weight ratio, gearing etc. but it does show just how well developed this example of the Micra's engine is.

THanks guys its been a bit of a journey and at last I have a very reliable totally driveable torque machine. The aim all along was torque as I realised kws was limited due to the supercharger.
It could go one step further with a smaller supercharger pulley but at 12psi it is getting near the limitations of what the SC12 will handle without meltdown. When I source the smaller pulley I will install as the engine can handle it.
Thats intersting micra_man.By the looks of it I can go chase whatever.
Not sure what she weighs but I would think I carry about an extra 10/15 kgs over factory specs.Still be under 900kgs thats for sure.Power to weight??
2006 year of motoring. Come on Bluey !!!

Traction?? Best option is to get her rolling first so a mild as compared to wild launch is okay as you have all that torque down low so you soon get her moving quick smart.I dunno on the few times I have given Whitey a real squirt it just keeps hauling up to around 160kph at a very constant rate of acceleration.
My right arm getting stronger from pulling her right as torque steer wants to haul you left which is a safe way to go I guess if you have to.
Drive shafts next ?? About all that is left to fail but I do not hammer it off the line.No need.

Thats why we have 2 heads so we do not run into the sea if going forward or reverse.
It is also why superchargers are the go down here, shorter time needed to get going, no turbo lag.
Yes we have a couple of drag strips down here.

Tassie sounds pretty cool. Again I want to get down there and check it out.

Yeah get that thing to the strip one time.. Go easy on her though, don't want any more repairs just for chasing a "time" as such. I'm always worried about stuffing my car, because you always push it to the limits when racing.

But I guess the great thing about that is that you hopefully sort more and more things out eventually to get it really reliable and rocksolid.

Go white knight.

Look at that curve or maybe i should say straight line in the graph.Thats awesome,David.Well done!!

I had another look at the spec of white knight and i just impress by your brave action you've done to it,its one of a kind and even you failed at some stages but you keep on going...i should learn from you that i should keep on with my micra and not stop from chasing the dream. But one thing in my mind is how much approx have you invested in the engine and drivetain components?? And how much extra kgs at the front you reckon??

If only NSW Rta do allow cars to modify a bit more like full road cage, fixed back seats, carbon bonnet,...etc, "2" should be my dream machine today...:(

I have spent around $10k all up which seeing what I now have it is a cheap torque warrior. I am very fortunate that I have great mates like Laurie at Rotech Automotive in Tassie where I have full use of all his facilities and his knowledge plus he charges me like $30/hour when we both work side by side.
He saw it as a challange also and being a rotary man just loves small motors pumping out big amounts of grunt.
I am also very fortunate that Errol at Datrats has helped source a lot of parts, offer heaps of advice no charge and luckily he had the Autronic kicking around and I got it at a very reduced price.
A big thank you to Cisco also for originally selling me what was going to be his next monster at a very reasonable price.
Add the Whiteline gear etc what I paid for the car and around $20k is what the journey has cost me.
Extra weight?? Not sure. Supercharger plus intercooler minus lightweight flywheel, alloy drive pulley and reckon not much differance. Pulsar front discs heavier but maybe car about 10kg heavier max.
