Primera 1.8 petrol, burning oil

Hi all, got a Primera, and noticed that its burning oil, about 250ml every 2 weeks no sign of a leak on the floor so must be burning it off through the fuel system, only a slight sign of black smoke when you rev the engine, car is an 04 plate and has done 70K.

I have been told its either the valve seals or piston rings, both of which are expensive to fix, no turbo so can't be that.

Before I start digging and paying out loads of money, does anyone else have one of these, do you have the same issue, if so, maybe its just a common thing, some cars do drink oil.

Or, can anyone suggest anything else that it might be?

Its not a big issue, I just top up the oil level every two weeks after washing the car.

is it a qg18 engine cod, do you know?
if so a lad at work had an almera tino 1.8 that burnt oil, was the rings, ended up running dry and he thinks it may have caused damage to the varianle cam solenoid he ended up scrapping the car, so as andy says id compression test it
