mods for £10 or less!...

hey guys was just sitting here thinking 'hummm i wonder what mods can be done for under £1O' it can be anything :)so lets here wha ya got :)

Performance
before any performance mod its common sense to first make sure the engine's in good working condition as a starting base line. so a full service, make sure all the sensors are clean n working within spec, cleaned the TB idle controller valve, wirebrushed the dizzy cap points, brakes not binding, etc

enlarge airbox hole

remove TB hotwire mesh
bypass TB fast idle coolant lines

but after bypassing the coolant lines you'll need to remove the fast idle waxstat mechanism and readjust the warm/cold idle

The fast idle waxstat tends to seize when old so the stuck mechanism keeps the throttle partially open in "fast idle" mode, even when engines warmed up. Ppl tend to just adjust the idle screw to without resolving the main cause.

Hence reason for removing the waxstat mechanism is to allow the throttle to fully close and let the IAV control the idle since it does the same job. And thus why you also need to clean the IAV and readjust the idle screw.

Reason for bypassing the TB coolant pipe is to keep the TB cool = marginally cooler air. The coolant originally ran the fast idle waxstat hence you have to remove the mech after bypassing. Plus the coolant kept the TB warm during extreme winter.

The teflon inlet spacer is more effective imho cos it prevents the hot engine from heating the entire inlet mani & TB hence much cooler inlet air

Oh and yes as skinner says remove as much unessential weight improves all performance free. Replace spare tyre with tyreweld, remove back &passenger seats, carpet, bulkhead soundproof, etc depends how much comfort ya wanna lose

Thanks for that. Stupidly now i have got rid of my spare CG13 engine i am now looking for one to High Comp and fettle with mods such as this, haha. good job another cvt came into work today :D i will be trying this bypass and spacer trick. im going to to get some base figures from my current engine with manifold/tb/inlet air temps etc to see what is what afterwards :D

would be interesting to see how much of a temp drop effect my bypassed TB, thick teflon spaced manifold and insulated IC piping has during a hot trackday

i took the cheaper option and use 3 gaskets :) and some insulation under the mani (there,s a lot of heat radiating up from the sump and block)
