ICE advice - recommendations

Hi all,

I know there are some knowledgeable ICE enthusiasts in the club currently. I used to be quite up on decent subs, amps and speakers a few years ago but i've kind of lost touch in the hunt for looks and power!

I was wondering if i could get some recommendations on good subs/amps/setup's etc. I've always liked the symmetry of two subs (usually 12's for their versatility) and an amp in between but considering the size of the K10 boot it might be restricting the air movement back there and therefore not allowing me the best bass. So i am open to changes if it's considered not a good setup.

I'll probably be looking to spend around the £600 mark. I generally listen to Clubbing and d'n'b, which produces a fairly wide range of low frequency notes, but when I want to show of the system I generally crank up some r’n’b or Hiphop/garage to get the really low notes going. I like deep, low, long bass (pavement crackers!) rather than punchy higher end stuff.

Right, I’ve given as much information as I imagine you’ll need, if there’s anything else let me know.

Off you go :)

Right, rather than first suggesting equipment, there's differing types of enclosures! If you want low, loud and serious sub-bass rumble, the best option is a ported enclosure. However, the problems with this is that you normally have to build the box yourself (most pre-fab ported boxes are dire), and the box will need to be bigger compared to sealed, so you might not fit 2 12's ported in the boot.

The easiest option by far is therefore sealed, and they also tend to be louder when the boot is opened (important for shows for you I would have thought).

So.......after all that carp! I'd say the easiest option for you would be to go for 2 12's (or one decent 12) in a sealed enclosure (or ported for a single 12, if you have the time/skills to make a box), a decent amplifier for the sub/s, then an amplifier for your front speakers, or one 4-channel amp, with 2 channels bridged to run one subwoofer, and the other 2 channels running your fronts, or........there are loads of options!

I'd say:

- Dedicated subwoofer amp
- 2/4 Channel amp for other speakers
- 4awg Wiring Kit
- 1/2 12" subwoofers

I guess you have a headunit, front speakers, etc?

i have a pioneer 6100 from the good old days :)

But i will be changing that for a pioneer 8100 or 90-mp i think, plus i haven't bought internal speakers yet but the cost of these will not be included in the £600, that is for the subs and amp for the boot.

recommendations for internals would also be helpful, would like 2 decent component sets (1 front, 1 rear) and some additional tweeters i think for the B-pillers.

I will be fibreglassing the boot build so making boxes shouldn't be an issue either way, plus it might help to fit the 2 12's as i can arrange to mount the amp somewhere else (i.e. door cards/under seat etc)

No one? Thought there were a few ICE bods on the site? Or does no one use this part of the forum? :)

im running a kicker solobaric square 12" and that has got to be one of the best for a nice deep deep bass, plus it covers more surface area than standard subs. so for subs recommend one of these definately saves space rather than having 2 12's and boy is it loud!!

My head unit is a Kenwood KDC-W5031. In the trunk I've got a 12" JBL GT4. This one is powered by a 5 channel amp. 4 x 50W RMS at channels. 150W RMS at subwoofer. The 4 x 50W channels are bridged, wich makes 2 x 100W RMS. At those channels I have 2 Pioneer 4way 6"x9" speakers, those are 85 RMS. The amp is also powered by a Power Cap 1 Farat. There is a lot of bass coming out of this install. Everything is shaking, license plate, rear mirror, side mirrors everyting. And this install has cost me about 700 euro. I don't know how much pound that is. Greetz and good luck!

"ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY, ITS ALL ABOUT THE DUM DUM DADADA DUM"

seriously, i could recomend the Jonah Lomu series subs and amps from fusion...

the amps come in several sizes.... the smallest being a 2000WRMS single channel from 1ohm stable, 2ohm and 4ohm application. although its about 4ft long and wont fit in a micra boot.....(ive tried)

my install.....

JVC KDG-9102 pict head unit....

audiobahn 12" sub running from an Alpine MRD300 V12 amp,

also custom leather install from a Vibe CBR Active 10" evolution amp package on the opposite side of the boot,

infinity Kappa 360W 6x9's in the rear footwells powered by a Vibe BB1 400W amp,

Front speakers are Vibe SEK 6" Kevlar components from another BB1 400W amp.........

it is soooo freekin loud.....i mean almost blow your head off loud...and no distortion...

im sure it has allready been said.... but you dont have to stick with one company either.... in fact that can be a very bad thing to do.... read up some reviews and see what performs the best....
thats what i did...

Vibe Infinity Alpine Audiobahn JVC...........the best of the best as i could afford..

The Audiobahn's sound pretty good considering that they're not that expensive, i was tempted by one at one point but just didn't get round to buying it.

Might look in to these, i do like Vibe's though or rockfords. but they're amps are ridiculously priced!

A 12" and 10" of different makes in the same airspace?! :suspect:

I wouldnt say Vibe or Audiobahn are that good really, all show and no trousers.

I'd say, for a decent setup Batch, try this:

Subwoofers:

2 x JBL 12" GTO 120D's - fantastic subwoofer for the money, awesome sound, and great build quality. Also matched well to quite a few amps:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4235

Enclosure:

CAD Twin 12" subwoofer enclosure - a decent enclosure for both subwoofers if you dont want to build your own:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4279

Amps:

1 x JBL GTO 601.1 Mono Channel Subwoofer Amplifier - Wire this mono channel amp in parallel with the two subwoofers to give ~600wrms (300wrms per sub) to the subwoofers:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4134

1 x JBL GTO 75.4 4-Channel Amplifier - Fantastic for the price, at least 100wrms per channel, great for powering 2 sets of components, are giving loads of juice to one set of components (bridge 2 channels):

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4140

Wiring:

1 x CAD 4awg wiring kit - plenty for what you need!

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=204

1 x CAD distribution block (for amp grounds):

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4754

1 x CAD fused distribution block (for amp power):

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4752

1 x QED pack of fuses (pair of fuses for distribution block, come with blue LED's):

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3443

1m (or whatever you need) CAD 8awg power wiring (red) - for fused distribution block to multi-channel JBL amp:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3271

1m (or whatever you need) CAD 8awg power wiring (black) - for amp to distribution grounding block:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3270

1m (or whatever you need) CAD 4awg power wiring (red) - for fused distribution block to subwoofer amp:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3269

1m (or whatever you need) CAD 4awg power wiring (black) - for subwoofer amp to grounding distribution block:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3268

10-12m ish of QX Connect speaker wire - For the 2 sets of component speakers, get as much as you need, but it should be suitable for taking all the power right to the components:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3411

Component Speakers:

Now this really depends on the size you want, but ideally, the bigger the better. With the above 4-channel amp you've got loads of power on tap, so why not use it!

You also really do NOT need extra tweeters in the B-pillars. If you've got externally amped speakers and they are set up correctly, you just wont need them. My single set can easily take my head off if needed!

I'd personally suggest 2 sets of these Alpine Type-S's - they should lap up 100wrms each!:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3337

If you want to save a bit of money, then get 2 sets of the following:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=5135

Finished!

That lot will set you back just over £600, but includes the Alpine components, or under £600 if you go for the cheaper JBL's.

Imo that would be an awesome setup. Lots of power on tap, 2 subwoofers, seperate amp for the components and 2 sets of nicely powered components, along with all the wiring!

Let me know what you think :)

certainly sounds like you know what you're talking about so i don't think it'd be clever to criticise!! :)

looks fairly detailed too so i'll have a look at how much i can get this stuff for and come back to you.

Thanks for the detailed answer, wouldn't have considered JBL really, they have really good top end subs as far as i can remember but wasn't sure about their lower end stuff.

Sounds like good stuff though, like i say i'll have a look into these bits and pieces

Ok no problem.

JBL are probably one of the best budget brands out there at the moment, the equipment you get for the price is astonishing!

If only I knew this much when I started out, I've wasted so much time and money on stuff that really isnt any good.

Let me know how you get on.

well... you could allways go stupid and go for a nakamichi head unit, Boston accustics components and MTX subs with some nice fusion digital amps...

but that lot would set you back about £6000

Not at all, and Nak have gone downhill recently anyway.

A nice setup with an Alpine Headunit, Rainbow/Arc Audio/RE/DLS/Genesis components, amp and Arc Audio/Image Dynamics/RE/DLS/Genesis/Boston Acoustics subwoofer/s shouldnt be more than £1k-£1.5k if you shop around, easily!

    yeah but depends how many of them you get,,,,,hahahaha

my old nakamichi was awesome... the CD400.... mental clarity even at full volume... brilliant quality... listening to tripple X on my in car DVD player through it was something else....o_O
