First Cat removal? ('special bolts')

Had a look in the Haynes manual earlier about removing the first cat (next to the manifold) and it's held to the rest of the exhaust system with 'special bolts'?

What's special about them, do i need a special tool?

No special bolts, just a load of 12mm (IIRC) bolts, i found it easier to remove the manifold and cat together to get better access.

Ah ok cool, I'll have another go at your manifold tomorrow frank, will take the manifold and cat out together :) hoping I can get some mole grips on that bolt once it's out!

yearh as frank says they ahve springs on them...also tend to be rusty as hell, so can easily be rounded off! i removed the down pipe off my donor car (M-reg k11) and they came off first time without and rounding or snapping of the bolts! just depends on your luck! as the ones on my mums (S-reg k11) woulddnt come off!

Soak everything in WD-40 and leave for a while before starting any work like that, it all helps reduce the chances of rounding off the bolts.

I am trying to change my cat too but the manifold will not come out because of the alternator.Do I have to remove it too?
Everything is loose (off) but another 1/4 or1/8 inch is needed to clear the studs.

i assume you have aircon ? (the alternator is higher if thats the case, and most likely in the way )

I ended up filing down the one difficult bolt. Yes it has air con.
Now that it is out Isee that I have the wrong converter;mine is a 93
but I got one for a 2000. The second sensor doesn t fit.
There is a threaded hole but it does not go into the units body.

yes the coilpack engine has a different mani and downpipe, and only 1 longer cat eh

Yes . There is a thread of some sort in it but t is shallow only; about half an inch or so deep.
I got it with manifold from japan (crazy postage).I m trying not to get another.

ahh, i saw one with an EGR pipe attached to it the other day, just block it off eh :grinning:
has the mani not got a lambda hole then ?

It does, but there is another sensor that was attached to the original converter lower area.
after cat sensor I guess. I m guessing that without it i will get a check engine light?

eh?

it might be the old single wire lambda eh, and yes fire some pics up, its like the old vanden plas princess eh

going by one of your pics, that is a coilpack mani/cat eh, with the old 1 wire lambda and what looks like an exhaust temp probe

The lambda has 3 wires going to it. the smaller thing has 2.
The Temperature probe .. is it needed? can I install it further down?
The small hole does not go into the unit almost as if it is for mounting something to the exterior.
Thanks for the info

this is confusing fwn so the lower hole/thread is blind ? (is,nt drilled through) where was the temp probe fitted ? does your car have the 2 cats system ?
