Corolla - written off :( (now with crash pics)

Last night I had the worst accident I have ever had in 7 years of driving.

Coming back from a night out with friends in a pool team which I captain, the team won 7-0 and we were going back to our pub to celebrate from an away match. Following each other back, it was a fantastic night out lol!

I approached an unfamiliar bend on a country road in damp/wet conditions, the back end kicked out, I briefly corrected it and the next thing I know I hit the verge of the road and being upside down, crawling out of the passenger seat unharmed which hasn't really sunk in yet. My friends stopped further down the road and came to see if I was ok.

Apparently according to the police the bend is well known for drivers skidding off as there is an entrance to a farmers field which brings a lot crap onto the road, my speed was well under the limit and did have full control of the car, however once the car began to slide I couldn't prevent it from hitting the verge. How the car ended up upside down is just bizarre, it must have hit the verge and flipped it up and over.

It's now in the hands of my insurers, I cannot gain access to the car as the police arranged pick up through a local company who have placed it in a police compound.

A tad annoyed as we where not informed of this and cannot get access. It's not a police matter due to no other cars being involved which will speed up the process. The Police where great, didn't even give me any crap about speeding or asked if I'd been drinking (which I don't). The Officer was amazed how calm and collective I was and apart from letting us know we shall not be able to get access to car, they were on the scene in minutes and acted very professionally.

The damage to the car from what I could see last night will make it a write off, substantial damage to the rear end of the car, skirts ripped off, windows smashed, passenger side wheel pushed in possible axle damage. Over all toyota's build quality did me well, the corolla is built like a tank and protected me, no air bag went off though, which surprised me.

I'm a little shaky this morning, but doing ok and very lucky to get out alive. If I can get photo's of the car I will do, but at present I don't think I will be able to unless it goes for repair, which I doubt.

R.I.P my beloved corolla.

oh my kev, sorry to hear this, glad however your ok. The exact same happened to one of my other friends less than a week ago :s

Oh my god Kev that's terrible! It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy (or car) :(

You've got my number if you need anything.

I'm glad you're okay though mate cos at the end of the day, cars are only lumps of metal. If you know what I mean.

Such a shame considering the amount of time and effort you put into making it a truly one off car :(

jesus! really sorry to hear that kev glad your ok thats the main thing.

very sad about the corolla after all the time and effort youve put into it :( hope it all gets sorted out mate and you get what the cars worth!

Omg mate thats terrible, must be really gutting, but im glad you are ok.

Cheers everyone, now on the phone to coalville police station as I want my car back, there is ££££'s of equipment in there and I should be allowed access, it's my car!

edit: I have to wait until it's been moved to a repair specialist where it will be reviewed as to whether it will be scrapped or repaired, hopefully once it's been moved I can get access and remove a few bits.

Kev

Don't want to say this but cars are only usually impounded if taken for evidence. They may have removed it if it was causing an obstruction at which point it'll have been removed and will only be released to your insurance company. We charge £105 for removal and £12 a day for sitting in the compound, but your force may be different. Once it's assessed by your insurance company you should be allowed to reclaim your possesions.

Sorry to hear this Kev, at least you were in a Corolla. When mine was written off by an Astra I was also pleased how it'd maintained integrety.

Pete

This isn't a police matter Pete. I was the only person involved and no statement or incident number was given.

I wasn't even breathelised, no witness statements where made or anything like that.

The reason it's in the compound is that the Police arranged pick up of the car, if I would have done, which I wish now, then It would be somewhere else. It was removed because it could have slide down the verge onto the road.

Really sorry to hear this mate, but the big positive is your unhurt and we are all thankful for that.

A cars a car, yes its your pride and joy but they are easy to move on from.

Dont let this dampen your spirit mate, you'll be back in no time with another show stopper

Neil

Thats Terrible, im really sorry to hear that, such a nice car and paintwork :(

But like always im glad your able to tell us and not badly hurt! I spose the road condistion will help your claim?

Darren.

harsh mate, sorry to hear that, glad you are ok tho :)

i hope it all turns out ok, maybe the car isn't that bad....

man this is shocking news..... this is probably one of the finest corrolas ive ever seen. your such a nice guy Kev, reading it actually made me skip a breath.

Like you said noone else was involved, you were not drinking and were in control of the car so i cant see why the police have inpounded your car but it will work out for the best dont worry

main thing is mate you are ok...i think the whole of the MSC is thankful for that

Aww no way Kev. Very sorry to hear this and feel gutted for you, but at least you are ok. Hopefully you can get the stuff back and get something else sorted. Main thing is you're ok though.

What a bummer. Can't imagine how u feel after everthing you've put into it. But as everone else has said, glad your ok.

holy crap, thats such a loss of a great car, but cars can be replaced, people can't, glad to hear you got through it unhurt

wow, realy sorry to hear this, as everyone has said, i rolled my 309gti a couple of times and had my dad arange collection, but that still went to an impound where it was stripped and sold on....

harsh luck

Thanks everyone :)

My mods are declared like for like and my respray is included, who knows what will happen, my insurance is smack on correct and I even have a copy of my modified vehicle report.

I was back behind the wheel today as I'm insured on Mum's car, took my time and was very steady, so I'm pleased I drove again soo quick.

I don't think I could drive the corolla again if it's repairable, but I'll see what the insurance company say, personally I think it's a write off with the amount of damage done.

Kev

That's one of the most important things you can do after a crash, drive another car as soon as possible. Otherwise your brain mulls things over and even if you leave it a week you can end up scared to drive again.

Hope the insurance company sort you out mate :)

Sorry to hear mate!! maybe the car isnt that bad as you said you were going slowly and the lack of airbags normally mean less than about 25mph. Glad you could walk out of it! and i hope they dont take anything from it while its in the compound!

shame about the car mate feel for you...

But like in all incidents like this i say count ya blessings... as long as your A*OK, thats all that matters... forget the car and damage etc... your alive un-harmed thank the lord...

hope you get it all sorted soon, and will be back on the road... :)

not good to here kev.i believe everything happens for a reason matey, and f it was meant to be it was meant to be :)

at least you are ok and the car can be replaced (as insurance was all covered etc)

keep us updated :)

Sorry to hear about this Kev, hope insurance goes all well. Glad you're back on the road after a short time. I made a mistake of leaving it about 5/6 weeks after i wrote off my Corsa.

Just read this.... No way!?

Good that you're fine (that's the main thing) and ace that you've got back into the drivers' seat ALL RESPECT!

no matter what the outcome with the insurance etc you've come out trumps with your life and confidence to get back to it.

Thanks everyone, well I basically have another car now. My mum was going to part ex her 1999 1.8 escort ghia x for a new car this year and she has very kindly offered it me for free.

Which means any money that comes through from the claim will go towards modifying the escort. It wouldn't be my ideal choice but I know with contacts I can make it into a stunning car. I would prefer to stay jap, but it's an excellent opportunity and I drive it a lot anyway.

lol I'm already making plans, lowering the car of course, angel eye headlights, rear smoked lights, exhaust system and filter, double din dvd hu and get Steve to respray it.

I'm already back in work, although today was very hard trying to focus and put it out of my mind. But things have returned to normal very quickly, however I still want to see my car.

I have done a fair bit driving already since the crash and re-found my confidence behind the wheel again.

Im glad your back behind the wheel, and its great your mum has kindly given you the car - but you dont have to do anything with it mate. Maybe wait and see what happens with the outcome of the insurance, and buy a car you want with the money!

You could probably part x the escort too

Well the car is very well equipped.

air con, electric everything, drives well, very smooth fast acceleration and lots of tuning and styling options as well.

kev

sorry to hear about the crash etc.

Warning these escorts are crap, my mates one fell to peices with rust, the battery tray compelety rusted through into the passenger footwell a massive big hole.

The electronics were terrible car kept on stalling and cutting off and never starting, these cars can be a nightmare, would be a shame to spend some welly on it and then its just keeps on dieing on you. Stay Jap, avoid the crap.

Well I know the past history of the car and it's in A1 condition bodywork wise and very well looked after and extremely low mileage.

Kev

Glad to hear your getting back into routine. Your going to wait for the insurance decision first though aren't you lol? No non Jap cars allowed on the stand after all :p

glad to hear your ok, the car is repalceable, your not! what would the msc do without you. shame to see another jap car bite the dust :(

Well of course I'm considering other cars, however if I do choose to buy something different with the payout from the insurance then I would have very little money to do anything with the car I get.

Kev

its upto you mate but everyone i know with fords just rag them around for a few years get sick of them and usually get newer fords like focus, fiestas etc.

I like my old fords they were great and the RS series are all nice as well. Everything they made in between is shoddy.

Kev glad to see your thinking ahead already, but seriously fords are done to death, you can do better than that!

It's an kind offer though. I can see where he's coming from wanting to accept it. To Kev it's a ford, but to his mum it's just a decent car, but Kev obviously likes it to. If that was me and i turned the offer down i would be seen as very ungrateful.

Kev you've said you like it, and you obviously know theres a big list of modding parts to go for, just drop a different engine in it somewhere down the line!!! :)
