clutch/ gesrbox problem

i have a grinding noise coming from the engine bay. when i push the clucth in the noise dissapears. when i drive 1st and 2nd are very noisy.

Mechanic rekons i have to change the gearbox because the bearings inside are crunchy. But when i presss the clutch in the noise stops.I think it might be the thrust bearing on the clucth.

Anyone know how i can distinguish the difference between the two without pulling the gearbox off. I dont trust mechanics as ive been ripped off and had doggy mechanics who know less then i do.

had a similar problem.....sounds like u will need a new gearbox and probably a clutch at the same time....very common problem...

With the thust bearing you tend to hear it only out of gear while idling but your hearing it in first and 2nd gear. When you say very noisy, is it a grinding or whining type of sound.

the noise is both grinding and whining when i drive but at idle its just grinding. If i take of very slow in 1st gear the noise is definetly grinding (bad bearing sound).

Does anyone know what the cost of a new gearbox second hand or reconditioned one are.

Also what it should cost to get it replaced.

ive found a clutch kit for $109. at Autobarn.
