Cleaning Engines

depends on how delicate the surface is and how caked the dirt/carbon is.

Detergent strength (soft for delicate, bearing, light dirt surfaces/seals -> strong for heavily caked non-bearing metal surfaces)
wd40
washing powder
petrol
brake/carb cleaner

Agitator (soft for delicate, bearing, light dirt surfaces/seals -> aggressive for heavily caked non-bearing metal surfaces)
cloth, shirt, rag
brush in washing powder
scotch pad
wirebrush (manual or wheel)
rust remover wheel

Dont go using petrol & wire brush togeather though ;)
 
Paraffin - can you still get it???? will remove pretty much anything oil based, much safer than petrol.
Spray it all over your engine, let it soak, wash off, fire your engine up and it will just evaporate without blowing you up.;)
 
I used that to clean up my cam cover before painting it, worked fine, but take care with it as it is a very conc. hydroxide which can cause serious damage to the eyes.....
