Alternator tear down / repair help

As I can't do anything else because I'm waiting for parts I decided to start stripping the alternator down so I could paint the case and also because I like to learn how these things work.

First thing I've noticed is the brushes are below the 10mm threshold mentioned in Haynes so need replacing. Anybody know which ones I would need to buy to replace, or if I could just replace that whole unit where I'd source that?

Second thing is I can't get the plastic piece to move on the top (bit below the plastic cover) anybody have any ideas?

not servicable tbh. when the brushes r worn, so are the slip rings so you just replace the whole thing.

Thanks for that. Have read through your blog, but not that far through... There's so much!

I'll try to source another then. Luckily I didn't get as brave as you and have only removed the cover and the brush unit!
