1.3 engine swap.

as low miles as you can get, preferably not an auto engine, deff not an engine off a 17 to 21 year old lad, really i like to see engines running beforehand, but not always possible. unfortunately there's not a definitive list to look for, just make sure it in a general good condition visually. no oil leaks etc.

Is there something fundamentally different with the auto lumps then?

On most cars converting an auto to manual is simply a matter of sticking a needle-roller bearing (£7 on my BOA Cosworth lump) into the gearbox end of the crank and replacing a torque convertor with a flywheel. Generally they are a better engine to go for too as you have to know how/be trying to rev the nuts off an auto whereas a manual could have spent it's entire life bouncing off the limiter going everywhere in a low gear.

One of my other passions is Minis where unfortunately although the auto engines are the same original casting the machining is quite different and putting an auto engine on a manual box is not a simple matter.
