super charger

An easy (read bodge) method would be an m45 on a 1:2.4 ratio pulley, ga16 black injectors, back off the timing and disconnect the MAF plug. That should see 5psi boost and maybe 100hp (on stock exhaust, I imagine a tubular 4 branch could add a couple more bhp).
Really you'd want sr20 maf, custom fuel rail with larger injectors, bypass/recirc valve, programmable ecu/daughterboard, mapping etc...
 
Regardless of which you choose. How its made is key to making power. If its poorly made it will just blow up or not work
 
Superchargers won't match the maximum power output of turbo's because superchargers run on power from the crank that would otherwise go to the wheels, whereas turbos are driven off waste exhaust gas energy (a bit more efficient). A supercharger can give maximum boost from idle however and has none of the lag associated with turbos and will feel similar to fitting a bigger engine. 5psi supercharging will make a 1.3 feel a bit like a 1.7
 
okay thanks guys my k11 has had a fair bit of engine work and would be able to handle a turbo etc is there any turbo kits to fit or do i have to make a custom one ?
 
You'll have to read up on some turbo builds on here to get that answer, theres a mixture of science and opinion involved in that answer and I haven't a great deal of turbo experience...
 
Smaller turbos are your better option for faster spooling. Bigger turbos for cooler air. Nothing we've used is considered a big turbo. Td04s and T3s are the biggest

Finding a small sc (smaller in size than mine), is pretty easy...getting it cheap is another thing all together.

Which way you go SC or Turbo depends what you're looking for.

While i don't consider building either hard (lots of info online), unfortunately there's even fewer sc'd micras than there are turbo'd ones on here so not a lot to compare notes with (pros / cons etc). :)
 
I tinkered with the sc12 units from the old mr2. I've seen these on a few micras but do take playing to fit them.
In my opinion a turbo is cheaper to fit all in but as above they both have pros and cons and are a fair bit of work either way
 
Was thinking that too, just have the turbo blowing through the turbo, the bypass valve on the sc can be modded so it engages when the turbos come on boost :)
 
Don't need the clutch though, with a bypass valve set up correctly sc's work at like 95% efficiency ;)
 
Compound charging is always over complicated by individuals and can be done in a much simpler and thus more reliable way. Much simpler and more cost effective to opt for a single turbo for the average power levels sought though.
 
I though compound charging was to allow a MAHOOSIVE turbo to be used without having to wait for 5k rpm for the turbo to spool..

Yes for the spooling issue
No because its more efficient. Sc give more torque so low down torque up.
Peak power up when turbo takes over
All about efficiency and power delivery over just peak power
 
Jus to bring this back again.....what about if I used the m24 from the vw 1.4 tsi,

My turbo don't come on until 3500-4000 rpm (I think, gauge broke)

So if I used the m24 s/c and disengage it on electro clutch at 35k jus as turbo comes on, lag will be cancelled out.....right?
 
i think it'd be a really jerky switch between super and turbo if you essentially just turn the super off.

obviously its not easy to do but:
i think you need a bypass (like k10 style), but opening based on revs instead of back-pressure (which is how i believe the k10 system works, but im not sure!!!!), so say its completely closed from idle to 2500, then gradually opens to full supercharger bypass by 3750.
i believe that you could bring the fully bypass revs down (relative to the electromagnetic clutch version) because of the transition, and you may well get a torque boost as well on the overlap.
 
What about a bypass valve that operates at a certain pressure , say 0.5 bar

Turbo, into s/c, bypass on, full turbo

With s/c, it would be instant power, right?
 
Id have a supercharger before turbo on electro pulley
2 inlets to the turbo (one from supercharger and another to atmosphere)
Have a flap or gate or whatever you want to call it swap between the 2 inlets
All based on a boost pressure sensor

Quickly thinking off the top of my head.. might have missed something important
 
So little m24 s/c on electro clutch
Boost to 0.5 bar
Opens bypass
Turbo comes on
S/c disengaged (no drain on engine)
 
Why not up the static compression a bit if theres too much lag? (And off the boost a bit)

Why not run just the supercharger, you can set them to give you say (for example) 6 psi from idle all the way to the red line...
 
Say I wanna run 1 bar , turbo don't come on till 3-4k

Little supercharger to boost engine till 0.5 bar , 3.5k, turbos spooled up by then, and takes over, s/c disengages, no parasitic lose from that, and turbo takes the boost rest of the way


Instant power, and efficient, and beings it's a large turbo, it won't be spinning it's nuts off so won't be as much heat.........? Lol
