tyre width restriction

Just thought i'd say hello first cos this is my first post and you all seem very helpfull here. So hello all!

Anyway, I've currently got 15" rims with 195/50 tyres that came with the wheels when i bought them. Am i restricted to the 195 width, or can i go a little wider? I'd like to go to a 40 profile but no tyre manufacturer seems to do that profile for the 195, the lowest seems to be 45. I don't want to change the rims cos the tyres are gonna cost me enough!

Thanks for any help.

hello spagatoni, yes you probably can fit wider tyres, it depends on the width of the rims, but its very likely that you could put 205 section tyres, can i ask why you want 40 profile tyres tho, is this to prevent tyres touching the body, if so then you might find this help full
