I always push a rag in under the butterfly and then spray the cleaner. If you use your wife's tooth brush it helps remove the dirt. I recently cleaned my own which had quite a thick layer of dirt on the back of the butterfly which I removed with a flat blade screw driver wrapped with a bit of rag to prevent any damage.
