You may be interested to know of a road safety project currently being run by RoSPA’s road safety department, which is intended to give us a better understanding of the risks faced, and created, by young drivers at work (17-24 years).

To get employers views on the matter, RoSPA has designed a questionnaire online at http://www.rospa.com/roadsafety/youngdriversatwork - and we are trying to circulate this link widely to employers of young drivers.

If you do know any employers of young drivers then we would be grateful if you could inform them of the project and share the link above with them. If you employ young drivers yourself then we would be grateful if you could complete the questionnaire.

It will take around 10 minutes and you shouldn't need to search for information to answer the questions. None of the responses will be attributed to an individual or an organisation.

It looks at a range of driver training issues such as
• how well employers feel the present system of driver training and testing prepares young people for the sort of driving they do for work
• whether employers would recognise and make use of a 'driving for work qualification' when recruiting or managing young staff who drive as part of their job, and
• if so, what should be included in such a qualification or training programme.

The results will be much more significant and useful if we get a large number of respondents and a wide range of views – whether an organisation only has a few young drivers who make occasional deliveries, or many young staff who spend much of their time driving as part of their job we’re looking to get

The results will be published in a report in March 2009. This will be freely available and will help employers and road safety professionals to better understand the risks for young at-work drivers, give guidance on how those risks can be reduced and on what help employers want.

The work will also help to inform the DSA's strategy towards post-test learning for young at-work drivers and Lifelong Driver Development in general.

If you want further information or a paper copy of the questionnaire then please feel free to get in touch with me directly on 0121 248 2078.

Yours sincerely
