o-ringing for copper head gaskets

Hi

i ahve just been looking up the usage of copper haed gaskets and have found that the head and/or block should be o-ringed to ensure a durable seal. I have looked up o-ringing and its a piece of wire around the circumference of the cylinder block / head but my question is how would the wire be kept in place if it was placed on the cylinder head as it would be upside down when puting back on, i take it a groove 1/2 the size of the o ring would hav to be made? also is this process strictly nessacery.

you have to get a recess cut into the block and/or head steve

ok cheers frank, dont look like that is going to happen anytime soon, i dont particually want to go cuting my cylinder head to find that the gasket wont work, this is for the ST by the way
