Nissan Micra K11

Hi I am Mike - just joined
Ok I have my Mother's Micra P Reg 1.1 3 door auto. She gave up driving and gave the car to me.
Had it a while and increased the mileage from 30000 odd to 70000 odd.Due to lack of use when my mum had it the gear shift had become stiff and difficult to put in gear etc - a common problem I am told - yet once in gear drove perfectly well - I am sure this is ringing a few bells !
Eventually this has become worse but is easier to put in gear when warmed up - I stopped driving the car a few weeks ago as filled up with petrol to go on a trip and went to put car into reverse to back into my drive and the gear lever snapped off in my hand !!!! it had become much more difficult SOMETIMES to select drive or reverse - I guess the strain was just too much for the tubular gear shift - took the trims off and revealed that the T-Handle shift terminates at right angles to a spindle at the lower end - I think these are welded together - anyway broken at this point -
How do I remove the gear shift frame from the floor of the car and does anything have to disconnect underneath
Even repairing this has the gear box gone too far ? oil seems red still and NOT dirty - no idea about brushes but understand what they do - an auto gear box specialist quoted £3500 to replace the NCVT which is ridiculous
Can I replace the gear shift frame economically if so where do I get one ? if I can get this far is it worth replacing the brushes ? I should say that the car was also squealing a bit on drive take up (as if it needed oiling)and trying to stall when pulling up - in fact this is a bit of an art to drive it without stalling it - the car still starts instantly on turn of the key,and seems still too good to scrap - although I am currently looking for a 5 speed K11 would like to not give up on this one - can anybody advise please ?
