Gear boxes

Hi,

can anyone tell me how to distinguish the different types of k10 gear boxes? also which is the best for a 1lt model?

The 5 speed wide ratio would be best on a 1.0, however always believing i had one,apparently i have the short ratio instead. Either way, the car is still better to drive than the 4 speed box

you can tell the different between the 4/5 speed boxes cus the 5 speed is bigger.and for the ratio on the top of the gearbox where the clutch cable holder bolts to if you wirebrush the flat face you should have some number ,take no notice of the 5 or 6 digits is the end to ie
S5.4 speed only pre 85 had 3.5 diff.....this is for best top speed very rare now
S5.4 speed only after 85 had 3.8 diff
S5 5 speed all had 4.0 diff....this for pickup found on early 1.0 collets
S4 5 speed 1.2 88 on had 3.8

where would you suggest that my ex B-reg Micra fitted there then? it had a 5speed box too.. thats gotta be 1983ish?

The following is estimated speed in each gear at 6000rpm using 195/45/15 wheels (which are on my k10).

first is for the 5 speed close ratio gearbox.

1st 27.3 MPH
2nd 47.6 MPH
3rd 70.4 MPH
4th 90.6 MPH
5th 109.6 MPH

Second is for the 5 speed Long Ratio Gearbox

1st 29 MPH
2nd 50.6 MPH
3rd 78.7 MPH
4th 107.6 MPH
5th 137.4 MPH

bearing in mind the 1.0 k10 has a book time of 87mph top speed and the 1.2 has 93mph it would seem that the close ratio is far better as with the long ratio box the top speed would have to be acheived in 4th unlike the close box where top speed can be acheived in 5th.

only thing that the 5speed long ratio box would be better for is 1/4mile runs due to only having 2 gear changes and not 3. bad thing about the long ratio box is the change from 3rd to 4th, its far too long and drops the revs down too much

and for economy.

mark where have you got those speeds from?

he probably worked them out using the gear ratio and final drive.
