Fitting a turbo

Hey guys,

Before I ask... I'm only really wanting to do this for the challenge of giving it a go, I'm not trying to make my Micra as fast as possible and I know there are better ways of doing this.

But I'm curious about turbos (aren't we all!) and I just fancy a challenge this summer so I'd like to try to fit one to my Super S.

So a few questions:
- Is it possible to fit a K10 gearbox to a Nissan Figaro MA10ET? I couldnt find a conclusive yes or no using the search...
- What other engines are sensible swaps, which have turbos (remember I'm not looking for the most power in the world... just a turbo ;))
- Is it possible to just bolt on some other random turbo to my 1.2, if modifications were made... if so, what modifications are needed?

Cheers guys :)

they are the same block so if you had an ma10et from a fig,all the the other bits loom, fuel tank, ecu etc minus the gearbox it would fit

ma09et is the st. iirc as crazy said there the same block, ya biggest challenge will probably be getting hold of a decent priced figaro with the engine intact. depends on how much your willing to shell out.

as for bolting another turbo on, well anythings possible with enough modification aye. prob the more difficult option tho would you be looking to go using a carb? if not your going to have to find a fuel injection system anyway so you'll prob be looking for a figaro/ march turbo/st anyway

Some people may completly hare me for saying this (ED), but sorting out the fuel injection, maybe mechanical fuel injection may be an option to consider, I have this on my RS Turbo and it was very easy to set up and get running, it works on the negative pressure caused by the engine sucking a flap open which then puts fuel into the engine. The more pressure, the more the flap opens, the more fuel which is added to the engine. An electronic fuel injection system would be better, as it can be mapped and if you can get hold of a figaro it would be best suited for this purpose.

Just think that if it's something you want to try it would probably be a cheaper option and an easier option to install and set up. If you coud get a turbo manifold fitted to the MA engine that is. This is only an idea, i'm so expecting people to say MFi is crap lol.

feul injection is always going to be the easier option as theres a direct solution i.e figaro. would be interesting to see carbed turbo conversion tho

ST is ma09ert and totally different to the MA10et.

I believe all the march turbo's had auto boxes.

Yes, but try and find all the bits from a figaro to do this conversion? You'll be paying through the roof prices to get the bits individually, and it's a very rare to see a figaro in poor condition to salvage the bits.

Although There was a a poor conditioned figaro on ebay not too long ago, went for £750. Was a shame no one here got it, can't see something like that ever coming up again though.

I believe OMEX ecu could be fitted to a K10 to manage the fuel injection system, but won't be cheap.

Can't see it being easy to turbo a car running on a carb, I personally would give mechanical fuel injection a crack, mainly because I have most of the bits sitting around which I could use.

Figaro ECU and loom is your best bet though! Just you got hardly any chance of finding one!

true, either way a turbo conversion is going to cost a pretty penny to pull off. good point with the gearbox another of the problems you'll run into, the most direct solution to that would be the box from a cg10 or even cg13, the clutch would need seeing to also.

Hmmm. Interesting. Tell me more about carburettor/turbo combinations, whats the deal with these?

I was thinking this could be the easiest option because it means you only have to modify the exhaust manifold, which lots of you guys have done already for only a few hundred pounds, however then you have to increase the fuel pressure and supply to stop that getting diluted.

So, we are sure that manual gearboxes do not fit onto MA10ET engines? Why is this?

you would have to mount the carburetter pre-turbo, else it blows the fuel back down the mainjet
i think this rules out using an intercooler

So if I simply bolted a turbo onto a modified manifold... force fed the air into the usual place... it wouldn't work? :p Darn.

I might be able to get a specialist blow through carb for this? Then of course a new inlet manifold is needed... but I guess this is no bad thing.

I think some more research is needed.

Don't care about inter cooler yet... don't go there

You should give me a call if you want some pratical info...

hey if you need a reliable fast stock engine use a toyota starlett GT engine. I have one in my car and it is awesome power, it would be very hard for a 4 cylinder to catch you. Low end, Mids and top power is unbelievable, i run a/c and full the clock very quickly.

One problem you need some good tyres, on 2nd at 2500rpm floor it and it will smoke the tyres, and from there it repeats until 4th.

GOOD FUN!!!!!!!!!

thats a lot of power, must be forged? i play with a 4E-FTE when helping my mate out, his is stock though (except FMIC). he beats me on the 1/4 mile but I'm ahead on the sprinting ;) good little engines those- and a proved, very tunable

as for fitting mech injection- totally my opinion this- if you going to the trouble then just fit electronic, unless your familiar with mech systems such as K-jet or L-jet already of course. no need for an OMEX / fancy ECU if your engineering minded, pop on a megasquirt (which you build yourself from a kit for much less £££) and use GM sensors, and log on to www.msefi.com for all the tech help you'll need.

as for the compressed air stuff i've no idea, i'm clueless when it comes to FI.

As i say just my opinion and my 2P worth (not even sure if its even worth 2p in all honesty)
