Engine oil in gearbox

Hi everyone,
has anyone used engine oil in their gearbox with the intention of reducing drag in the gearbox
from the heavy gearbox oil used as normal, and if so was there any problems, damage etc,
thanks guy's.

Never seen the need to personally :)
70w90 is bob on for gearboxes. Not as tight a tolerance as engine bearings so I can't see it lubricating properly and falling through the gaps

Moly-slip I find a good additive as it sticks to the gears and protects em. They're is a mild noticeable difference when its pushed hard

Hey Skymera,
you must have been on a "tight budget" using used engine oil!:), did you notice any difference in performance "honestly" and would you advise using it or not using it????...

Tight budget ? No. Tight arse? Yes.

I noticed no difference. Afaik Frank also uses 10/40 in his gearbox.

A lot of Honda drivers use engine oil too

yeh, 10/40 in my old super s, and 10/40 in my current one for years now :)

Hey Frank,
is there any noticable difference, and why if you don't mind me asking,
do you still use use it?, thank's.
it stops the gears being notchy on a winter startup mate, and for cheapness too, and millions of austin rovers used the g/box under the engine as a sump (mini,s etc) and yes mine is still full of used engine oil :)

Thank's Frank, and all of you that responded!,
I know motorbikes use the same engine oil in the gearbox and they have no issues
as well as ATV'S etc, thanks again guy's!!!..
