cam timing

am i right in thinking that the cams need to be aligned with the coloured links on the chain as my car is starting to act weird doesnt settle on the revs i have been told that the cams have to be at 9 and 12 oclock but do they have to be exact 9 and 12 this is starting to do my head in now as i dont want to pay a garage to do it and the timing diagram on micra.com.au doesnt make enough sense

cheers frank gona have another bash at it tomorrow i think that me inlet cam is out just as it sounds like a vtec engine now
