i was internetting today when i came across a double rim which takes two motorbike tyres. very strange idea, i don't know if it is better or not, i suppose its like an instant low profile spare if one goes flat.

anyway here are some pics of double tyres on cars:

The ones at the top are ratta's they were on his "Two Face" half rat half OEM+ Scirocco for a bit. They were originally designed to have specific tyres, it just happens that the motorbike tyres fit.

A bit more on twin tyres on the Carbibles page here, as well as some on the always interesting Michelin Tweel.

That is the most pointless thing I've ever seen :p you're getting less contact patch, twice the price for a new set and where would the valve be for the inside wheel??

there are some advantages, for example it makes it less likely to get a car stopping puncture, you have double the tire wall strength which would improve the handling, you can also run the tires at different pressures giving you a more dynamic setup, for example the outer tire could be at a higher pressure so that it compresses less when cornering.l

Surely run flats are a batter alternative although they do have there disadvantages!

looks like a good idea at first, but when you start to imagine the bill for changing the complete 8 tyres, quickly you will change your opinion.

Very funky idea how much crap do you reckon would get stuck in between the two tyres though? possibly a good idea for snow?
anyways Larger tweel image here:

But i would prefer these...

Try 50% more expensive...and the ride sucks.:(

That's not true! A 17" run flat is about £200 supplied and fitted and normal 17" tyre is about £180 supplied and fitted. Yes you can get 17" tyres cheaper but they are budget tyres and do not compared with the quality of the run flat tyre. Therefore like for like they are not that much more expensive. However I can not argue with the ride as its very bad for a road car!

Good point Shaun. My dad was once behind a dumper lorry on the motorway doing about 60 and spotted a half brick stuck between the two tyres on one side going round and round . Need less to say he got out of the way sharpish .
