Timing Chain

Just a quick one. Is it possible to change the top timing chain without separating the engine. I went to do it later and the only way it seemed was to pull the balance shaft off which i didn't want to do just in case I messed up the timing.

you can jamie, but there is a little alloy stump cast into the cover that stops the upper chain coming off the idler sprocket, i usually saw half way through, then clamp some longnose molegrips to it and snap it off

nah, it stops the lower chain from jumping a tooth when doing a head gasket etc
stuff some rag down the hole to catch the filings (and the stump when it accidentally slips out the grips !)
