Starter Motor

The stater motor on my girl friend's Nissan Micra Passion seems to be nakered (when turing the ignition sounds like something being sawed)

Where under the bonnet is the starter motor located?

under the battery rob, does it turn the engine over ?

Nope, just makes that grinding sound, could it be anything else?

the engine check light also stays on.

if there,s a patch of knackered teeth on the flywheel you could bump the car a bit in gear so that some better teeth line up, if not then you,ll need to remove the starter and check it out eh (2 x 14mm bolts holding the starter iirc)

possibly a weak/sticky starter solenoid?
does it sound like when ur trying to start an already running engine sort of grinding?
