Port and polish

I've heard a coupl of things about this, dunno how true they are:

One is that the "polish" bit is pointless as the boundary layer of a gas is barely moving anyway and a surface would have to be really very rough to reach up through the boundary layer.

Another is that enlarging the inlet port means the air flows into your cylinder with less velocity, and hence momentum, which actually lowers your dynamic compression ratio.

I'm currently doing a fluid dynamics module at uni and the theory seems to support those^^

Was just last night thinking off doing this, how hard is it to do, I've done it on a mk3 fiesta.
Would it be just set engine to TDC and then dismantle head.? Would also be buying a haynes manual to help
