new engine ideas?

right my little 1 litre 26 year old engine is starting to feel her age
she is old and very gradually feeling sluggish
i know want to change my engine, obviously nothing too big but just something fairly basic, poky and reliable

i have been looking at almera twin cam engines, but i am hoping some of you know of engines that are pretty much a straight swap

nothing will be a straight swap, nearest to a straight swap is a cg13de engine, but even this will be a bit of work

as i actually work on cars alot, just didnt want to spend too long on it as have alot of work on at the moment

a carbed/early GA16 would probably be the easiest eh
