My turn... Front end overhaul

Well at 157,000km she's a bit tired. Not suprised considering how I take corners.

Here's the list of what is shagged:

-Steering rack end seals (leaking)
-FLH Bearing
-FLH ball joint (just has slack, no torn rubber boot)

Not too bad, steering has probably been caused by someone using the wrong oil at some stage in the car's life - the reconditioners think its a bit odd for mine to be leaking at this stage in its life but anyway. Pump should be OK as any dextron grade oil will lubricate it sufficiently. And YES this means I will not be ditching the power steering anymore. There's a reason for this and I'm simply not willing to try it out only to find I can't do it and yes its airbag related.
Bearing and ball joint are just wear and tear items. I've now done 30,000km of **** roads, and the guy before me drove on equally crap roads. Plus I've overloaded the car before and set off on a 6000km journey over 2 weeks... That wouldn't have helped things.

So at the end of this week I'm putting it up on stands and pulling everything out. Will just get a local mechanic where I work to press the new stuff in place.

What I'm reconditioning:

-Steering rack ($280)

What I'm replacing:

-All Front suspension bushings (4) $??
-Both ball joints (2) $??
-Both front bearings $??
-Swaybar & bushings (whiteline) - $189

What I'll replace depending on condition:

-End steering rack knuckle joint things mainly depending on condition and cost. If these aren't stuffed yet I won't replace them as they're a piece of piss to replace if they do get flogged out.

I'll let you all know how much this ends up setting me back. Apart from pressing in the new parts and rebuilding the rack all labour will be completed by myself. Bloody pain in the bum as this will halt the progess of the "other" project I'm working on. But if you play hard, you pay hard hehe.

Cheers

Ok looks like the front bearings are only available from Nissan in this country. I'm not risking poor quality items from Ebay overseas.

Unless I can push the bearings out and take them down to the bearing place to get some suitable replacements I'm stuck with buying genuine Nissan prices which are around $64 for each side. Hopefully with the dust seals... If not I will be a very unhappy camper.

its unikely nissan will be the ONLY people who stock suitable bearings... i'd be pretty certain you can get them from bearing specialists

please keep a list of part numbers that you use and i'll cross check them at work (autobarn) to see how good the pricing is, or could get a for a number of people buying the same thing

Already done the calling around. None of the major bearing specialists here have a listing for the K11 front bearings. One does - it was simply listed as "genuine" meaning that they sourced the bearing from Nissan.

I'm sure I could get one if I pressed a bearing out and took it in to get some measurements but I don't get that sort of time anymore. Going to be easier to just get the bearings from nissan, throw the bearings and hubs at someone with a press and give them $50 to push them in.

I have my suspicions GA16 Pulsar bearings would be the closest match, but I just dont have the time to figure out if that's the case or not.

Just driving home before I'm starting to wonder if its actually the bearing making noise.

whoop whoop whoop whoop

Coupled with a light grinding noise and about 1mm of play when I jack it up, grab the wheel and wobble it around.

Movement is not coming from the hub so the balljoint is OK for the moment but I reckon I'll do it while I've got it all apart if i can.

Update. Front suspension is out on the ground. Steering rack tomorrow.

All bushings are still perfect. There's no reason why I should be replacing them at this stage. Yay! Right hand ball joint and bearing are OK. Left hand ball joint worn and has a slight amount of slack, bearing is SCREWED.

Looks like water has entered the bearing. Most likely from when I drove through deep water (over the hub). Bugger.

Another bugger. Damaged an ABS sensor removing it from hub. Absolute bastards to remove. Very poor show from nissan - no seals to stop water from geting between the plastic body of the sensor and the machined part of the hub. end result? Rust. THis made it increddibly difficult to remove the sensors. Bit pissed off with nissan's engineering forethought (or lack thereof) right now.

Also even more frustrated with the power steering even though I knew it was a problem.

Starting to dislike the car and wanting to buy something german... Farken japs just dont engineer things properly

Why dont you just press the bearings out and get the Make and part number of the casing.. Go to CBC bearings and pay half the price for the smae factory bearing?
I get nearly all my bearings this way. Have replaced every bearing in my gearbox for under $150 including seals.

Don't have the time to do that. Only time I get off from work are the weekends when the bearing suppliers are all closed! No good...

And I was actually quoted only a few dollars less to be supplied some genuine nissan bearings, but I had to drive 40min away to get them. Stuff that.

So now the hunt is on for ball joint replacements. Only the left hand needs to be replaced but not doing things half arsed.

Here is the car as it sits right now... lol

Won't be driving it for a little while.. Still have to remove the steering rack. I think I may as well pull the gearbox and engine out as well. Put my Jap motor in as there's an oil leak starting from the timing chain cover on my motor.
