K12 Cutting Out

Hi,

Had the Micra serviced during the week (including new plugs) and today its cut out on me. Before the service it had sometimes struggled to hold its revs when in neutral and was hoping the service would fix this but apparently not. To make matters worse, when it cut out this morning it was right as I was going over a level crossing, luckily I had enough momentum to get past the tracks but not really a situation I wanted to be put in.

Is the anything obvious and simple to check that could be the cause before I start spending money?

Hopefully its not a chain problem, year/engine cc/faultcodes ?

Its an 03 1.2.

Haven't got a code reader so don't know if theres any codes coming up. What other symptoms would the chain give?

you usually get a bouncing tacho needle too, and codereaders are only about 20 quid eh

At idle the tacho needle can bounce between about 500-900, almost like it needs to keep using a choke to keep them up. I'll see if I can get hold of a code reader to find out - is it an obdII I need?
