Its a squeeze

Just got back from picking up the new project. Had to squeeze it in the garage untill i can get round to it. Needs a new crossmember and new exhaust but drove like a dream all the way back. First 1.0 CVT iv had. Cant wait to get messing about with it.

What a rusty ****!

Where do you weld the lower crossmember to bud when you re-fit it?

Might be worth off me doing this as mines a tad crusty also

Dont know tbh. Learning as i go. Theres three bolts either side which come out then its a case of looking at the new crossmember and figuring out where to cut. Ill edit a picture of were i cut and weld when i get it done.

Taken some more photos today as iv been going. also got a few questions if anyone can help.

First off i took to the lower cross member with the grinder and soon found out it wasnt the best way about this.
especially as i got to the tricky corner bits.

so this is the nearside after i found it was much easyer and time efective to drill the spot welds out, but not after id wasted a good bit of the morning grinding, as can be seen.

The next few photos are the offside to which i didn't use the grinder at all, i tried to take a picture of each side to show were i drilled the spot welds.

The Green Dots show the only places that i drilled. it was easy to see were the spot welds were through the paintwork.

Because the power steering pipes were in the way of the drill for this side i decided to got neanderthal on it and got a nice sharp chisel and put it in between the metal at the top and hit it with a lump hammer.(yellow arrow) worked fine and caused no damage, just sheared all the welds.

so next i got the misses to pick up a hammer and help me. we got the new part offered up and bolted on. going to borrow the welder from work tomorrow and finish the job off.

Now for the questions.

is this essential to structure, and if so does anyone have one i could buy, or ill just rebuild the bottom bit with new metal.

Next, does anyone have any bottom radiator mounts in beter condition than this that i could buy, as mine have seen better days.

ok so iv got the crossmember on permanently, welded up and looking good. i have mended the bonnet catch support bracket with some metal. but im haveing trouble with these lower radiator supports. i tried to save them but they just crumbled away. iv looked over ebay and cant find any. so im asking if anyone knows were i could get em? will they be available from nissan? has anyone ever seen them on ebay? does anyone have an old crossmember with them still attached from which they can be saved?
sorry for all the questions, its the only thing slowing me down now.

since my last post it has been sat at my work hopeing for an MOT, but when i got it in and up on the ramp i found the underside was f**ked ( rotten and bodged up with filler ).
so i tried welding it, major fail on my part. we only have a inverter/stick welder and it was way too much for the already weak metal to handle. so i rang our usual welding guy and took it to his place. he said it would be £300 to put right and thats coz we know him.

so i have decided against it and brought it home. to be striped down and done by myself when i can. in and among preparing it for JAE.

Get ready for a transformation.

Dusnt look too bad from inside. Probably going to put a plate in from the inside anyway.

after looking at rust and nasty stuff i decided to go and play in the engine bay.

Just having a look and a clean,

do people keep the cross head screw bolts for the cam cover or swap em out for something a bit more substantial?

also while talking about bolts what do people do about rusted manifold bolts while there at home on the drive way, without an air chisel?

I cross it but dont think its very important for the cover. Id like to now the size to change em too because the philips head is c**p haha
