How do you remove flywheel?

Hi,
I have just taken my gearbox off to fit a five speed and noticed my flywheel has about 1/4 to 1/3 of the teeth missing all the way round. Its been grinding on the starter since i bought it ( think the solenoid wasnt pushing the pinion out far enough ) so i got a starter with the five speed box from the scrappy. Just want to know if i should replace the flywheel or will it be allright with a better starter in there ( push the pinion further onto the remaning good part of the teeth?). If i do have to take off the flywheel how do you stop it from turning the engine when undoing the bolts?
Any help appriciated.......mcd
Sorry for the length off my post........

put one of the box bolts in the block and wedge a screwdriver into the teeth, resting on the bolt

Thanks for the replies, But can i hold the pulley bolt to stop the crank turning? ( think its tourqed up tighter? ). Also what do i need a bi-hex socket to undo the bolts or can i use a normal hex socket?
Thanks......mcd
