Hi, Im Lee, im 29, married with twin boys who are 4 in June and live in Belper, Derbyshire. Im the proud, new owner of a Micra K10 LS 1.0 1990.

Im really happy with the car, she looks awesome, very shiny red and the previous owner did a grand job of painting the silver wheels black. She in great condition for 21 years old and only done 79'000miles...£300. Bargain, i think, i hope.

My question is, and im sure youv had it a million times before so im sorry in advance...

The car seems to start and run great. there is a quite rattle/whine that goes away when the clutch is pressed, it not ever so loud, in fact, can only hear it when the radio is off and windows are shut but like I say, listen out and its there till you press the clutch, then it goes. Also, the gearbox seems to have a slight whine when driving. I kinda just think these noises are normal being a very old car. I can say since Iv gave the car a good run the idle wind has quitened but is still there, just.

Im not a two week wonder, Im here to stay, i like the reading on this forum and you all seem like great guys and im planning on keeping this car for as many years as it will serve me (Its a 2nd car, wife has main car).

I will be stumping up membership fees next week when im better off.

thanks again, Lee.

Nice one, an average price to get them problems sorted by a mechanic (I have a fairly cheap good one) would be very helpfull ta.

Good man!:grinning:

yeah, I thought that also, do you mean Engine oil or Gearbox oil? I wondered if gearbox has run dry as I had a Escort that had an empty gearbox once, ended up knackering the clutch bearing (So I was told). Is there any easy way I can check, fill my oil on my gearbox? Im no mechanic but iv changed barrels, pistons, exhausts on 50cc/125cc bikes and tinkered a bit with cars, did fill the oil myself on the Escort, just had to unscrew a nut on the front of the gearbox from under the car and squirt me oil in till it started pouring out the hole...job done. Please tell me a Micra is this easy lol?

Sorry, bit drunk now, didnt read properly! I see now, gbox oil, ty.

Release bearing is the clutch bearing If it's that which it sounds like it could be no amount of oil will save it! But the gear box oil is pretty much that simple yeah

Ahhh, well, did a service today minus Engine Oil as Ill use my father inlaws pit for that soon. changed spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter and topped up gearbox oil though it seemed to have some in. Hasnt made any difference though to be honest, the sound isnt really loud, unless you really listen you cant hear it much so Iv decided to just turn the volume up on my Stereo and ignore it lol. till it becomes a real problem obviously as the car is running great other than that.

On a plus note its like a rocket with the partial service Iv done, reckon its added 5bhp onto what I had, very nippy. Does anybody else feel proper cool and have a big grin on their face when theyre cruising in their K10? Just wondered as I love this car and feel great when I drive it and cant stop grinning ffrom ear to ear, Iv named it Henry cause its the same red as a Henry Hoover!

Bo selecta!:blues:

Change the release bearing (and clutch while ur at it). I did it a month or so ago with some help on here. If you've got a pit to work in and a spare pair of hands you'll be laughing. £30 for a clutch kit online.

Or if your near me bring it to me and I'll do it

Just a noisey thrust bearing which is normal since nobody seems to know how to make a good quality clutch kit these days. The whine when driving is the gearbox doing it's job, it's supposed to whine. They only ever stop whining when they're well worn.
If it drives nice then just drive it and look after it, like you said it's an old car so nobody can expect it to be perfect. Old cars are built the old way, with mechanical set-ups. They are true machines and nothing like the current generation of "playstation cars" where everything has to plug into a computer.

Thanks to all for grand advice. I agree with you though Porkpie, its all too easy to get car hpercondria lol...Iv been there, got through 16cars and a hell of a lot of mechanics in just 1 year. that was 1 of the reasons Iv taken a year away from cars and just shared my wifes car. Finally back in the game and Im gonna concentrate on enjoying my little space rocket rather than trying to find stuff to worry about.

The noise really aint so bad so I think shes got a few years in her yet, iv heard a lot worse like my Escorts clutch, that had a proper loud tick that went when the clutch was pressed. this is more of a quite purr just over the engine noise.(Y)
