Headlights intermittently go off when they should be on

Hi everyone,

I have been having issues with my 2001 998cc micra k11 automatic for past few months. The sidelights always work as do the full beams. The headlights however fail sometimes.

First time: the both headlights stopped working then during the drive the passenger headlight came on. I since replaced the drivers headlight and things seemed ok.

Then my passenger headlight stopped working then as i came to open the bonnet the headlight started working again with the banging of the bonnet. I am not an expert (once removed the automatic gear box fluid instead of the engine oil once...) but it sounds like a connection issue but i am not sure where it could be if both headlights seem vulnerable to this problem, unless both headlight connectors have dodgy connections (which could be the case since one light sometimes works whilst the other doesn't). I presume WD40 could be used to clean the connectors, is a wire brush also necessary?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you.
