Grimy Fuel Filter

I changed the Nissan fuel filter in my wife's LX last week. The car has 100,000 miles on it and I doubt it had ever been changed before, or at least not lately. I cut the top off the canister and the liquid, I won't call it fuel, that spilled out was as as thick and black as ink. Really foul. After the change, the car ran much more smoothly and seemed less prone to cutting out.

I replaced the filter with one from Halfords. I think, however, that in a couple of months I'll change it again and go back to the metal Nissan one.
