Engine honing is actually a process which is carried out after the block has been bored. It removes all the rough sharp peaks left over from the cutting process. It does NOT leave the bores super smooth infact the whole purpose is to leave honing groves that the oil sits in to lubricate the piston rings. If you had super smooth bores the engine would have a useful life measured in hours - rings would scrape all the oil from the bores and it would be usless. It is infact when this surface has worn away and the bores become smooth that high engine wear begins to take place.
