Difficulty Fitting Rear Brakes Shoes

I've just finished fitting new brake shoes to nearside rear of my Micra K11, and intend to tackle the offside next.
I found the job extremely fiddly and quite difficult - the upper and lower springs seem really strong! I had a lot of trouble getting them off, and back on. I used a pair of long-nosed pliers.
Has anyone got any tips for easing the springs out of their location holes on the shoes, and getting them back in again?
Incidentally, I found the Haynes Manual 'tip' of securing the trailing shoe to the backplate with the hold-down spring first, impossible to accomplish. I had to have both shoes free of the anchor points and pistons to have any hope of getting the springs back on.
