CV Gator replacement

Does anyone know how to split the outer CV joint on the drive shaft? I have disassembled the shaft from the car and now need to fit the new gator to the shaft. The CV housing has a lot of hammer marks arounfd the edgefrom when the job has been done in a garage before, but this seem a bit drastic. Any help would be useful, thanks.

hammering the rear of the joint is the only way to split the joint really, just be careful not to hit the inner bearing race, only the outer casing.

use a copper hammer so as not to damage the joint. i always get someone to push the shaft towards the gearbox as i tap the outer joint off, so i don't remove entire shaft from box or seperate inner cv joint.

He's already took the shaft off the car though, best bet is put the shaft in a vice before knocking the joint off now, and use a new circlip when you replace the joint if you can.
