Comparative Wheel/Tyre Weights

I replaced the alloys on my Super a few weeks back and put the Super's alloys on my wife's LX. I weighed each wheel and tyre combination and was surprised at the outcome:

Stock steel wheels with 155/70r13 tyres: 11kg/24.2lbs

Stock Super S alloys with 175/60R13 tyres: 12kg/26.4lbs

AEZ "Dino" alloys with 185/50R14 tyres: 14kg/30.8lbs

I had hoped to lose a little unsprung weight with the AEZ alloy and tyre combo but ended up gaining over four pounds. A 17" wheel and tyre combo must weigh at least 35/38 lbs. Not at all good for all around handling on a small car like the Micra.

hmm i was going to go with 14 inch and a low profile tyre but now im not sure. It weighs more, but there will be less flex in the tyre wall. Might just have to go with compomotive mo's :)

14" alloys with good tyres will always be better than 13" steels with tractor tyres on,,,lighter or not :)
