Annoying Rattle

I have a rattle that sounds like a heat shield but despite being up on the lift in the grange twice and being revved, shaken and banged there wasn’t a squeak, then drive away and it rattles. It doesn’t do it at idle only when the revs just coming to change gear point, then rattles and stops once revs drop. It sounds like your shaking a nut in a tin, quite a light rattle. It is from the front of the car, my first thought was cat but on listening it doesn’t seem to be coming from that area.

Any one encountered something similar and could point me in a direction to check?

I don’t think its anything serious just annoying.

Cheers

"Timing chain?

Sway bar links?

My second thought was timing chain but on listening to ones on you tube and descriptions i think not, also read the timing chain sheet on here which says no.

As for sway bar links I dunno, doesn't sound heavy enough I think.

Yeah mine does too and quite a few heat shields near there but all have been shook and banged etc and none seem loose.

I have no heat shields lol

"What about cat? Or the cover from the cat?

This was the first thing I thought, I took it to the garage and they ramped it. Revved it, banged it, shook it and examined the heat shield on the cat, all were silent. From the best I can make out with the window open it seems the rattles comes from the front.

40 mph ( or equiv ) ring a bell , I had that on my Micra and I came to the conclusion it was the diff humming .. which was possible but no one said it caused any problems , I would suspect the speedo would go wild ( a la Ford Escort )first if this was the case ?

No issues with the speedo going wild and can be at any low speed just before change gear, in third most common, sounds a light rattle. Just wish it would do it at idle so i could track the little bugger :)

"maybe its the exhaust rattling against either the body or f/swaybar just as the motor is under full load and flexing in the mounts, mine used to do this, you should see evedence of this most likely in the bends just before the cat

Thats and interesting thought I had not considered that, I will look into it, thanks.
