Baz's £20 K10...

OK picked up my K10 Super on the 23rd March 2007 (2 weeks ago). It cost £20 and it was in horrible condition. I failed to take any decent images of it when I first picked it up, but I did think to take a photo half way through cleaning it up, basically the whole cars bodywork looked like this:

J203KGB-001.jpg

Anyways, the next day a brake pipe was fitted, some bulbs done, some welding and the arch was bogged up with fibreglass to fill up a 40cm wide rust whole to scrape it through it's MOT. It passed, so then I set about cleaning her up.

Today it looks like this:

J203KGB-004.jpg

J203KGB-005.jpg

J203KGB-011.jpg

Obviously nothing like done, but I think I've not done a bad job of cleaning up the bodywork so far. As you can see the carpets and seats are yet to have the 'Baz' treatment. Also need to blacken up the bumpers a bit more plus a few other bits and pieces.

Jobs done so far:
--------------------------------
New brake pipe
New side repeater bulb
New brake light bulb
Welding
Quick-fix for the rotted arch
New Timing Belt
Oil Change x 2
New Oil Filter x 2
New Air Filter
Gearbox Oil change
Coolant flushed and replaced
Battery topped up
New Distributor Cap
New Rotor Arm
New HT Leads
New Spark Plugs
New Wheel Brake Cylinder
Brake Fluid flushed and replaced
New Fuel Filter
Front Wiper Arms resprayed
2nd Hand Boot Carpet from breakers yard
2nd Hand Window Winders from breakers yard
2nd Hand plastic doors that cover the back of the rear lights in the boot from breakers yard
Lots and lots and lots of washing, scrubbing and T-cutting!!

Things still to do:
--------------------------------
Get rear part of drivers side rubbing strip and fit
Get and fit drivers side front wing (seen one in the right colour in good nick in the breakers yard)
Fix Drivers side lock (there is a clip that is missing so the lock hangs out the door.)
Get new fuel filter (the one I have on at the mo is universal and seems to be restricting the fuel a litle)
Give the carb a good clean
Respray Rear Wiper Arm
Respray Wing Mirrors
Back-to-Black the bumpers and trim
Remove interior to give it the cleaning of its life
Get some new hub caps, some donkey has stabbed holes in mine so they could get them off rather than prizing them off, so they can't be holding grease anymore
Give the engine and engine bay a good clean
Get a parcel shelf.

Once that's all done it should be a perfectly standard and well running Micra. At the moment I just want to bring it back to stock. But no doubt when I've run out of normal jobs to do on it, I will end up tinkering with the engine for performance gains lol The lil MA-10 engine is in pretty good nick with 62000 miles on the clock.

Anyways, sorry to bore you all with that, this just seemed like an appropriate place to store what I've done so far so I can look back on it in a few weeks time when it's perfect.

Baz

Thanks guys. Not resprayed anything yet. The pictures do it more justice than they should. I think that colour red is great and it looks well in the sun. I've got the paint pretty much looking all the same colour just with T-cut, but still there is a slight colour mismatch where the previous owner has had a panel resprayed...I notice it and it annoys me. Also the photo is from the better side. As I mention I need to replace the front wing on the opposite side and the rear section of rubbing strip needs putting on (it was missing when i bought it) aswell as fixing the lock so it doesn't hang out. I also want to scrub down all the wheels respray them black and replace all the wheel trims because the wheel trims are different on the other side, and non of the trims are in great nick.

I wish I had some decent pics of it when it was manky, but to be honest when I got it home I didn't even go in the house before I started getting the worst of it off because it looked awful and I was worried that someone would ring the council to ask me to remove it

Excellent job!! I'm in the process of redoing my paint job... I didn't sand inbetween coats (I was new to cars :wasntme: ) and so I got serious orange peel... I stripped the hood, and have a coat on, and it looks like it's brand new :) My body had lots of holes, so needless to say I'm pretty handy when it comes to body filler now:grinning: Either way, keep up the good work!!

Today I had plans to start work on cleaning the interior, but due to getting horrendously drunk last night, work didn't start on anything until about 3pm this afternoon. Even so, I changed the interior from this:

J203KGB-033.jpg

To this:

J203KGB-021.jpg

I bunged all the interior on my neighbours drive:

J203KGB-034.jpg

Bunged the carpets in my garden:

J203KGB-024.jpg

And then spent an hour or so scrubbing the hell out of it with a nail brush and some hot water with lots of Fairy liquid in it. Didn't scrub the boot carpet too much because it's one from a scrap yard that is the wrong colour and I will be replacing it with a dark grey one as soon as I find one:

J203KGB-031.jpg

Whole thing went very smoothly really. Only problem areas were the amount of water that was under the carpet...so trying to work out where it's come in...think it must of come in from underneath as the carpet has a plastic backing and the carpet above the plastic backing was bone dry. Also the idle speed control system's bracket holding it to the floor pan was rusted fast, the screws wouldn't even come off using an impact 'driver so in the end I had to drill them out:

J203KGB-018.jpg

Anyways, carpets are on the washing line now until they dry. I'll start work cleaning the seats tomorrow and start to wash the floor pan, if I get a few hours spare. Might make a new bracket for the idle speed control unit aswell...doesn't need one really, but it'll look nicer than a rusty one.

Thanks for the comments :)

Today the carpets weren't quite dry enough to put back in and I want them to be bone dry before they go back, so not much was done. I did find time to clean the floor of the Micra, and all the black trim, came up quite nicely...almost a shame to put the carpets back in. lol

Tomorrow will clean the backs of the seats and then put everything back in again.

if you havent found the leak i wouldnt put anything back in yet

check the sunroof drain tubes by pouring water down them, if leaks in then thats problem if not

pour water into scuttle panel where the front wiper arms are on both sides, if water comes in its a dash out job to fix the hole

and would you look at that you have the wiring for the digital clock in there already!

Cheers Fordy, I think the water is coming in from underneath. The carpet on top was dry as a bone, but the sound deadening under the carpet was soaking wet. I realised today that I had jet washed the underside last week...so it could easily have gotten in thru the hole for the gear stick or one of the other factory holes. I will do what you suggested aswell though just to make doubly sure. Might try that tonight actually. Thanks.

i had the same problem but all it was, was a grommit not in properly, but having a carpet thats damp underneith will start the floor rusting in no time

I checked the sunroof and scuttle panel, no water came in, also used a hose on the door and window seals, still no water, I've searched the car as thoroughly as I know how and the only way I can find any water getting in is from underneath and only through factory holes, so I will plug them up with tape until I get some blind grommets. I found a tiny hole under each rear arch today (but not ones that lead inside the car) which, once probed, became 4 rather more sizeable holes. I bashed about some sheet steel to the right shape and welded that all up today and sealed the welds with some high quality sealant that I found in my neighbours garage...which I have failed to get off my fingers despite attacking my hands with a scrubbing brush and petrol, parrafin, white spirits, industrial thinners, and swarfega. My hands have still got black sealant on them, but I probably now have blood poisoning from all the crap I've used lol. What's so daft is that I have boxes of surgical style gloves that I can use...I was just too lazy to go into the garage to get them. Stupid.

Interior in tomorrow as it's finally dried.

Try washing above the rear light clusters too, if they have been changed it will run down there and into the car when you break it will all come forward eventually into the passenger and drivers foot well!!!!!

Ah right, will have a look at that then. Cheers :)

Cheers Sammo. Finally got the engine running smoothly today by replacing the universal fuel filter with a proper fuel filter. The rubber piping that connects the metal fuel line to the bottom of the plastic fuel filter was very weak and snapped when I pulled the filter off. I found a similar bore of pipe on one of the V6 Ford engines my neighbour has in his loft. I hacksawed it to the right length and it fitted fine. It's a very slightly bigger bore but with new jubilee clips it fits fine. Engines running great now, very pleased.

Still haven't put the interior in, because I used some sealant in the car today and want to wait for it to go completely dry before replacing the carpets. I plan to start putting the interior back intomorrow as well as making a start on cleaning the engine bay and it's contents.

Nice job!!!

Fuel filter...would you beleive it?

I thiought even the universal onnes were decent enough...just goes to show what I dont know (but do now!!)

Yeah I was quite suprised that it did the job...I was intending to clean out the carb, as I thought it was probably summat to do with that, but I knew it wasn't the correct fuel filter on the car and knew that I wouldn't put my full effort into the carb if in the back of mind there was a niggling feeling that it could just be a cheap fuel filter issue instead lol. Got the part today, fitted it, and hey presto it runs great. The universal one had a slightly smaller bore, which probably was restricting the fuel a little. The symptoms were really only noticeable when driving hard, now the symptoms are gone :)

haha. Just thought I'd better point out that the one I've put on today is NOT a Nissan branded part, but it IS designed specifically for the K10 and looks identical to the proper Nissan part (except it doesn't say nissan on it and the plastic is less see-thru)...the universal one was an entirely different shape. I'll take photo's of the proper Nissan one, the Universal one, and the replacement non-nissan one I have on, and I'll post them here tomorrow so you can see the difference. The old filters are in my neighbours garage at the moment (he's got a posh clean double garage, whereas mine is full of crap so I do most my work in his garage lol)

OK Sammo, here is a pic of the Nissan fuel filter (on the right) and the universal one (on the left...obviously!):

J203KGB-055.jpg

And here is the nissan imitation that I have put on:

J203KGB-048.jpg

Was gonna take it off to take a photo but was running short on time and couldn't be bothered in the end lol, it's exactly the same size and shape as the proper nissan part except for some reason it has a very slightly bigger bore.

Was driving a lot today and the car is running really well. :)

Anyways, in the interests of keeping up my blog; today I put all the interior back in. I cleaned the backs and sides of the seats with cockpit shine, did a good job actually, I haven't yet cleaned the fabric on the seats due to lack of proper cleaner, bought some today though so I'll do that tomorrow. Here's the interior now:

J203KGB-068.jpg

Looking much much better than it did do.

I spent most of the day in the pub fixing the pub's computer but when I wasn't in the pub or fitting my interior I was blacking up my bumpers, and all the black trim. I also gave the tyres a quick squirt with tyre foam...there was no need for the tyre foam, I just like using the stuff lol Here's the results, I'm very pleased with the blackness of the bumpers and trim, it was a turtle wax product I used:

As you can see I am still to replace the from drivers side wing, which is just completely knackered. I will get round to getting a wing by the end of the week hopefully. I also still need to find and fit the rear part of the rubbing strips.

Next job, cleaning up the engine bay, then cleaning up the wheels and respraying them. I think I'm going to spray them black...not sure yet tho.

nice color of the seats i germany you only have grey seats (Lx hit etc) the super s seats and brown seats in de pre facelift

Good job :)

Black would look good on the rims. You shouldn't have a prob finding the rear part of a bump strip! The black's comes out really well tho. Let us know how long it stays that way!

Holey Moley...all in a day? you are on a misson!!!

Your pics of the filters do confirm that I have the non-nissan copy filter

I have to say that really WAS WORTH the effort...you have something unique there I think

Are you an asthetics guru only or are you fancying a bit of handling & / or performance tweaking?....be carefull it's a slippery slope...LOL

####NICE work mate!..keep it up

Oh, I agree 100% with EMS ...black rims would be BONGO!
(ems has been known to dabble in the art of making K10 look great!)

Looking awesome there mate!! how about spraying the bumpers red? thats what i did to my LS and it looks really good (if i may say so myself!). I was gonna spray my rims as well, black or maybe white? not surem if you spray them pls post pics as i really would love to see that!!

Noxon: Cheers, I quite like them, I didn't buy the car based on the seats, but I think I was lucky with them :) There a bit manky at the moment but tomorrow I'm gonna try and find time to clean the fabric up a bit on them.

Ems: Cheers, will let you know how long they stay that way! But like I say, I'm pleased with the immediate effect.

Sammo: Not an aesthetics guru at all. I've been into cars my whole life and have always been of the opinion that I don't care what it looks like I just want to make it dangerously powerful...I am currently saving my pennies for an S13 200sx. I know a guy with one that I can have for £100, it has no cylinder head and is knackered, but the bodywork is ok. Ultimately I intend to install an RB26 engine into it, but I think an SR20DET engine will be more likely to start with due to costs. But because that is my intended power project, I've basically just directed my efforts at making this lil K10 as clean as possible. It was just intended as a crappy run around initially, but I've grown attatched to it!! I expect that once I've gotten it looking how I want it to look, and there are no more jobs left to do on it, that I'll start tinkering with the engine. I was in the pub last night chatting to my neighbour...was seriously considering an SR20DET AWD K10, but I think I'd probably buy another K10 shell if I was gonna do that...and it wouldn't be in the next couple of months due to lack of funds. Thanks for the comments tho mate :)

Courior: Cheers, I did actually consider colour coding them...but to be honest I quite like the black on red contrast. As for the wheels, I think I will go for black...The only options I guess would be Red or Black, or Silver seeing as they're wheels. Red would look horrible in my opinion, wheels sprayed silver tend to look tacky, so I'm left with Black. I'll do 'em up and post the pics tho.

Thanks Paul, I am ridiculously drunk so no doubt my efforts will look horrendous in the morning, but you've inspired me to photoshop my options!

Red Wheels:

Black Wheels:
black.jpg

Ems Idea:
redonblack.jpg

The Black Wheels I've done look very matt in the photoshop I've done, I would make them shinier in real life. The red ones match the bodywork, but I still think they would be over the top. The black and red ones look good...but...I only have steel wheels and am not planning on buying alloys for this car. If they were alloys I would be more tempted to spend some time making them look great, but as steel wheels I think plain black may be best. I'm still not sure, but that's the direction I'm going in! I just think that the red ones, although good in theory, just are a bit over the top, I think that the black wheels, are kinda no-nonsense and less "look at me, look at mee!"...the black with red detail, either on the rim (Em's idea) or in the 'valley' of the wheels (Paul's idea) are making my brain hurt due to too much information...I can only handle small amounts of information like Red OR black..not red AND black lol!! During the posting of this post I've pretty much decided that I will paint them Black. Once that's done I will have a go with the red details and see what they look like.

Just been asked by the landlord of the pub I live next door to if I can cut down some trees for him tomorrow, so I'm not sure much will get done to the Nissan of Ninjaness...but we'll see ;)

burfy, can you post a pic to see what they look like for real?? I think this has motivated my to paint mine black!. but im gonna leave the nissan cap in the middle and all of the nuts crome.

Thanks for the comments :)

This morning I cleaned the engine bay. I didn't take any parts off to clean, I just cleaned them in situ, which was a pain, and doesn't get the parts properly clean, but to be honest it's good enough for me at the moment. There is still lots to be cleaned in the engine bay but I have a cracking headache due to my hangover and can't be arsed doing any more until my head ache is gone. I might have a go at doing one of the wheels later today if I feel better.

Anways, pics of the newly cleaned engine bay, as you can see there is plenty more work that can potentially be done on it, but it's OK as it is for now I think:

J203KGB-079.jpg

J203KGB-083.jpg

J203KGB-082.jpg

nah, I used Jizer spray, an old paint brush and a cloth. I did start steam cleaning it, but the steam cleaner I was using was designed fo stripping wallpaper, not cleaning cars, so it wasn't versatile enough to move in and around the engine, so I gave up on that idea. Once I'd cleaned it up with Jizer I gave it a spray over with WD-40 to shine it all up a bit. Took about 4 hours I guess. It's the one and only benefit of being between jobs..having some time to tinker with the car in the daylight!

Wow that looks excellent! One of the cleanest K10 engine bays i've seen. Great job

->Courior... I'd get you pics of my new steelies, but my car decided to crap out, and now it's at my buddy's garage :( I'll get some pictures a.s.a.p though!

->Baz.. You have BY FAR the cleanest Micra engine bay, never mind THE cleanest engine bay around... Very impressive.. Keep it that way and let the Micra live on forever!!

lol! I'm pleased you approve...I think the pics make it look cleaner than it is...there is still some work to do there...and there are FAR cleaner engine bays!! But I'm happy with it at the moment which is all that matters I guess.

This afternoon I used an autoglym poduct to shampoo the front and back seat fabric...was OK, they're clean, nothing to write home about though to be honest, so didn't bother to take photo's.

I have a lot to do tomorrow that is NOT Micra related unfortunately so can't see me getting much done on it. But if I have time I'm gonna start refurbishing the wheels I think. Will probably just do the spare to begin with to practice as I've never done it before. I plan to attatch a wire wheel to a grinder and attack the wheels with that to get rid of all the crap and rubbish and rust etc, then wash them, then dry them, then prime them, then spray them....anyone know any different or have any advice regards the wheels?

Same with body work, make sure there isn't a SPECK of rust, otherwise all your hard work will be gone in 3-4 months... Otherwise, probably should tape off the wheels when you're spraying... And assuming you don't know how to spray, spray left and right and make sure it's a constant/even line, don't lay it on too thick or it'll drip...

Cheers Burfy, duley noted. I can spray and have a compressor and a couple of spray guns. I hate spraying, so I don't do it very often, but I reckon I can knock a few wheels out without causing too much damage lol. I find things like wheels easier to spray because you can set them up on a table at a comfortable level and you can lay them flat. Doubt it's gonna happen tomorrow now, just been told that I need to fix someones website in the afternoon :(

Take 20 minutes from your day, set them up, spray and while you're working on the website, allow them to dry

haha if only I could work that quick...nah I'm pretty slow about everything I do, it would take me all day to properly do the wheels to the point where I was happy with them I think. Think that's why I would never be any good as a pro-mechanic lol

Well I'm in a bad mood today. There was a K10 wing in the right colour in good nick in a breakers about 20 miles from my house. When I first saw it I didn't have any tools to get it off and I didn't have any cash. I told the guy I wanted it and he said he would wait til I'd come back to remove the wing before he scrapped the car. Long story short, he didn't, went all the way up there and was not impressed. So to make me feel better I stole some bulbs and a clip to fix my drivers side lock barrel in place.

Then I went to another breakers which is notoriously expensive and found a lonely K10 which had been well-stripped. Despite this it had perfect condition hyraulic boot lifters and a perfect condition parcel shelf (albeit the wrong colour), it also had the rear parts of the rubbing strips which I've been after for a while. They charged me £14 for all that...I wasn't impressed and tried to knock them down but they weren't having any of it. I tried to tell them that my whole car only cost a fiver more, but the guy just looked at me with a blank face, eating his butties. Anyways I parted with my money £14 in the end and fitted the lifters and parcel shelf when I got home:

J203KGB-097.jpg

Comparison of my old lifters and the new ones I got:

J203KGB-096.jpg

I am pleased with them...the parcel shelf is the wrong colour but it's the same colour as my boot carpet (also the wrong colour for the car) so it doesn't look too out of place and will do until I find one the right colour. I'll keep the other lifters in as spare as they work perfectly well, still have all there compression and that, they just look horrible. I'll try and remove the nissan sticker, sand them down, respray and replace the Nissan sticker if possible.

Later on I have to go and cut someones hair, but if I cut it really quickly there should be enough daylight to wash and dry the side of the car before applying the new rubbing strip. And then I can fix the lock...I hope he wasn't expecting a good haircut lol

Not had much time today due to working on a few websites and helping my mate get parts for his Discovery, and I'm still really annoyed about the wing thing, but still I've done a few jobs that have been annoying me for a while so it's all good :)

Last night I had far too much to drink at a party in Manchester. This morning I put the remains of my crate of beer into my boot and drove the 45 miles home. I drive too fast at the best of times, and due going round roundabouts too hard God punished me by making one of the cans of beer explode as it hit the wall of the boot. I didn't know it had exploded until the point where all I could smell inside the car was beer. I pulled over to find that my interior that I just spent so long cleaning is now soaked in beer!

Ah well, will have to pull it all out again I guess.
