OK need some advice and quick? How can I find the owner of a car by its registration number I will tell you why......Our local council are in the process of pulling down some garages , now I presume they have notified everyone who rents these as when I was walking my dogs yesterday they were pushing out a 2 door sierra last taxed in 1993 (b reg) and it is in mint condition no rust anywhere even the word fantastic is understated...I want to buy this car before our local plod tow it away the clock is ticking the car is just stood there on the path doors unlocked and I need help I would hate to see this vandalized or towed it has to be saved........

cant ring dvla data protection act, they wont tell you as for car checker that wont either it just gives details of car like hpi report ect not the owners details

I've called the police before when a car has been parked so that I can't get mine out and they have then tried to contact the owner of the car (presumably using DVLA records). You may be able to get the details directly if you have a legitimate reason to know (e.g. they've dumped it outside your house). In theory, if you were to crash into this car, you might need to get this information in order to contact the owners insurance company. It's all pretty wooly though and by no means am I suggesting you drive round there and shunt it :grinning:

You can apply to the DVLA for the information but you need to fill in a valid reason on the form and of course since it's via post it's not a quick one and I don't know what reasons they would accept. i.e. they might not think that "because I'd like to buy it" is a valid reason. This is the route that the private companies that issue so-called fines use to get your details if you park for over 2 hours in certain car parks (Netto, McDonalds etc.).

Given what a decent 3-door Sierra is worth then I'd go and grab it quick smart and then go through the paperwork. If you can't get a response with the first route then simply apply for the V5. The DVLA will then contact their last registered keeper to check that the car has been sold rather than stolen and if they don't get a response then they will issue the new V5 document and that will have the previous registered keeper's address on it. If they do get a response from the registered keeper then it's a bit of an unknown as the car may have been nicked years ago and hidden in the garage so it might be the property of an insurance company and plod might end up knocking on the door.

just go and get it, obviously no one has claimed it so save it for now and store it in the garage and do the research later

Go get it and apply for the V5

The form can be obtained here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motorin...0?IdcService=GET_FILE&dID=85562&Rendition=Web

You may be the registered keeper, but not nessesarily the legal owner. If you revived the car and started using it you could conceivably get a visit from that legal owner, with plod in tow and have to give the car back. The process of claiming the V5 generates a letter sent to the previous registered keeper notifying them of the claim, so they might then get in touch.

I have had 2 two door sierras before i love them and yes I have had a look inside due to having some old ford keys lying around but there was no info on the owner, funny enough like all fords the key also fitted the ignition. As for just taking it I cant due to the fact I work for the post office and any court case involving theft would certainly lose me my job. I have been door knocking today but no one seems to know who it belongs to, all I got was it just appeared there so im off to see local plod tomorrow with reg number in hand. I will try and take some pics so I can post them....

well does them keys lock it? that would be best! get it outside your driveway and explain to the plod that its such a good car and you would like it and youve saved it from being damaged

Oh they lock it I also put one of those daft steering wheel pans on it lol. I will see tomorrow what the plod say...........

I would think it would be very unlikely to get to court, or a criminal charge being made. But you might have to expect that you would have to give the car back to its legal owner whenever they bothered to show up.

Making it secure is a good idea, and have you got any mates who could store it? Its the kind of thing that will just get hiab'd, by numties to weigh in or banger or by someone who wants a shell to build a lightening rod.

There's quite a few RR members who might be able to help in that area.

Argh bad news very bad news, I have traced the legal owner and it was an old lady in Reynolds close I can say where now! she would not sell it as it belonged to her late husband and she has said that it is going to be crushed as she did not want anyone to own it. She said that it would upset her to much to see someone driving around in it, I stopped trying at £500 and I promised her that it would not be driven locally but she was not having any of it......so if someone here has better persuasion skills than me the car can be found at Reynolds close Stanley dh9 and the owner lives in the far corner bungalow I did my best and failed what more can I say......thanks

Buy if the scrap yard/ tow away truck before it gets squashed

Think of the "scrap cars wanted" signs you see

They buy a shlitter of someone, if it's worth keeping, doing up and selling they do

If it's not it's weighed in, seriously this is your last chance!!

Get it taken away for her on the back of a lorry and delivered to your place !!:)

Let's be fair if she's old she ain't gonna particulary see it driving around either

Sounds cruel but if she's being difficult that's your only hope

If it's as good as you say it is it's a VERY profitable purchase

Good luck my man ;)

Im trying believe me my mate is going later with his scrap wagon as I told her I knew someone who did this then maybe I will get it

you got to respect her wishes
or explain that the old timers wouldnt crush it,,,,it defeats the objective they had
maybe write this in a respectfull way and post it with your number and explain why you tried hard to restore it
lets face it if she/we could restore the olders before they/we die we would

It needs no restoration at all it is mint I only found one spot of rust on the nearside door edge there is no flaking on any arches no paint blisters what so ever its been sat in a garage for 19 years doing nothing all that would be need is fluids changed belts ect brakes and a good polish as it has a very thick layer of dust on it....It makes me want to cry

exactly well good point but i hope your mate can get it! give it a new paint job and im very much sure the old lady wont notice....

good luck dude its sad to see all these good old cars go to waste

well,,,,,you could let her know her mans intention not to EVER bin it
water pumps prob siezed as well,,sitting that long
yousd to be a sight them 4 wheel drive sierras powering down in a corner
if she lets you tell her any time she calls,,youll take her shopping?

lol become her carer and get paid for it lol.... but still give the engine a clean and check over, dribble some oil into the cylinders, change the oil, change the water flush it all etc make sure everything works connect a battery and see how it goes mate, if you do get it you have to get a blog on here and umn name it

MY SIERRA I STOLE FROM AN OLD LADY MUHAHAHAHA

But are we not forgeting that if you do get the car you will have to still apply for a v5 and the old lady will be informed

....Unless you keep it stored for a few yearsgrr

Im not about to steal it lol as much as I love it I cant be getting into trouble with the law and losing my job, I think that maybe she wins as she has the winning hand and there is nowt anyone can do to persuade her.

unfortunately not at his yard he is allowed to sell parts only he is not allowed to sell complete cars, something to do with laws brought in a few years back to combat car ringing I think as he is not a salvage yard. I know every car in there is cut through the door posts on entry or a huge hole put in roof with a pick axe.

thats a bit unreasonable and a massive shame really, cant he sign it over to him instead of scrap?

and if hes lucky she wont notice the wrong bit has been filled out?

a daft k12 and car is now in breakers yard (my mates) in the lock up shed. She filled the disposed of section in on log book but kev just destroyed it told me to apply for log book, so we will wait and see....................
