how do you work out what offset is needed when buying new wheels?

my offset atm with 16" alloys as standard is 55..but if i wanted to fit 15" alloys do i need a different offset because the 15" standard alloys on base model cars are 45 offset?

or do i stay with 55.. :/

55et offset is quite close to the car..

If you wanted a wider stance than your 16's, then you want a smaller offset.. the smaller the number the wider the wheel will stick out...

..so at the end of the day its if it will clear your arch.. the difference between et55 and et45 is only 10mm...

Also the width of the alloy/tire is a factor.. try and keep the same width..

the ones on now are 185's that about 7.5" wide.

so if i get 185's again but 15's then they should be ok with 55 or 45 offset
