O/D on Auto Micra

Hi fellow members i was wondering if someone can help me .. i bought my self an auto micra .. its a 1.2 2005 model .. i can see the O/D light on the dash and am not sure if this should be on or off .. i remember a friend once told me O/D should only be on when driving on the motorway ... if the light is on does that mean the O/D is off ? ... sorry to sound thick ive never owned an auto before .. your help would be much appreciated
