Mirror JDM cluster milage with Original cluster?

Hey,

This will probably sounds dodgy but I assure you it's not :p Is there a way to change the milage on the odometer of a cluster so if I grabbed a JDM one which had say, 80,000km for example, I could make it match what my current cluster has so I can pop it in and have it show the same mileage?

This sort of thing could be used for bad things if you could wind it back, but what i'm thinking (ingeniously) is to use a spare speedo cable, connect it do a drill (i.e. reverse of how it was done in matilda, lol) and drive it forward. Or I could do it like ferris bueller did.. but forwards! Though I can see myself spending a lot of money in fuel doing it that way (but i'd get great economy!)

I almost don't want to post this as it could give some dishonest people the wrong idea.

lol.. all i can say is it won't take k's of driving backwards :) if your gona wind k's of, make sure you got a really really really really really really fast drill, otherwise you'll be there for an eternity ;) not that i'd eeerrr, know

Nah it'd be going forwards if anything :p It's crazy when you see pre-facelift K11's from japan with like 30,000km on the clock.

Hey I've got a crappy dremel here with a really long extension bit.. 30,000rpm should do the trick, aye? ;)

or an RC motor spins pretty quick, 27,000ish...

so you go forward and back up to the number... 'that matches your other cluster'

Ideally i'd like to just ditch the standard cluster and make my own, but that requires having a fair amount of money for good gauges :( Could just stuff off the speedo since it'll be a track car but it's still road registered so can't really do that legally ;)

That is unless you don't actually need a speedo.. I know what speed i'm doing without looking at the speedo most of the time anyway, lol :p Still need an odometer/trip meter though - couldn't live without those.

sorry to be a pain.. but on the same sorta note... anyone know how to remove the speedo needle?? it is possible without loosing the calibration of it?

i would be keen to find out how to turn the numbers back aswell cos my cars done 121 and the new cluster i got says 131.... although im not realy intending on selling it... it would be nice to be accurate.. for service history purposes...

yeah.. im starting to wonder whether its actualy possible/ worth it.... i might just cut a slit in the old number sheet (cos its just thin plastic) so that i can get it around the needle and just stick it over the mph one.... or not bother at all...

I restored an RS Escort once and pulled the actual cluster of 'number wheels' apart and put back together to 00000 so I'd know how many km's travelled since the restore. Mind you I had no 'ethical' issue with this as those odometers only went up to 99999 so you could never really tell how many kms it had travelled in it's life. - possibly something to do with Escorts rusting before they hit 100,000 or something :p

There's a brass donut around the chromed shaft that holds all the numbers. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to slide it sideways about 2mm, i.e. squeeze between the end of the shaft & the donut.
This allows the numbers to rotate loosely. Allign numbers to the desired position.
Push the brass donut back again, but don't make it too tight.

Pull the needle off & all will be revealed. You can use a screw driver as a lever against one of the screws if necessary.

I can't remember everything forever thou. It's a while since I did this. I can't remember if you also need to release the shaft mentioned above from the pressed metal frame to allow the numbers to rotate. There are folded pieces of metal at each end. I know I have used a screwdriver to open one up on a K11 before, allowing the shaft to come free, but I may have been doing something else.
I've certainly had to do this on other vehicles...
Seems everybody has taken an Escort speedo apart before?
